In an online seminar on March 4, 2021, Prof. Hoff and Bill Pottharst presented the work of the GAT Institute.
Prof. Dr. Hoff and Bill Pottharst (M.A.) gave a presentation entitled "Challenges of using assistive technologies in home care for older people" in a well-attended online seminar on March 4, 2021, presenting the work of the Health, Ageing, Technology (GAT) research institute at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing at the University of Oxford. The focus was on the contribution of assistive technologies to improving home care in view of the growing number of people in need of care in Germany and the increasing living distance between older and younger family members, which is increasingly calling into question the previous care model of the family providing the main care for people in need of care. Assistance technologies can make a significant contribution to relieving the burden on family caregivers and nursing staff if their design is based on the needs of those affected and not primarily on what is technically feasible. The GAT Institute informs the public about this with the web-based VATI technology navigator and in the AAL laboratory in the Frauenburgkarree, where interested parties can try out the technology for themselves. Both were met with great interest by the seminar participants in Oxford. Following the presentation, both GAT researchers engaged in intensive discussions with their Oxford colleagues and international guests from Argentina, Brazil, China, Japan, Spain, South Africa, the U.S., etc. about the risks and opportunities of using assistance technologies.
