Reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly
This is how energy supply should be. This is why the employees in this research focus area are involved in interdisciplinary joint projects. Central topics are the generation and provision of energy with regard to resource conservation, environmental protection and climate neutrality.
The scientists at the HSZG tackle energy and environmental engineering problems on the basis of long-established expertise. The spectrum ranges from the optimization of power plant processes to automation technology and biotechnology.
In addition, interdisciplinary research groups are investigating the social aspects and acceptance problems of the energy transition.

Increasing energy efficiency in thermal energy systems
Investigation of thermal energy storage systems to increase efficiency in power plants. The core element is the construction of the THERESAto develop new control and measurement methods.

Development and production of a combustion furnace for the almost pollutant-free (low emission) combustion of unconventional biomass (ZIM)
Development of a new type of incinerator for difficult fuels (e.g. straw). The aim is a low-emission system for decentralized commercial use that solves problems with ash melting behavior.

Development of a new type of cyclone heat exchanger with condensation energy utilization to increase the efficiency of biomass drying plants - "ZETA"
New development of a cyclone heat exchanger ("ZETA cyclone") that massively increases the efficiency of drying containers. It utilizes latent heat from the exhaust air and improves dust separation at the same time.

Development of web-based software for regional greenhouse gas inventories. The tool supports local authorities in collecting and calculating data across seven sectors.
Energy Efficiency Benchmark for Industrial SME
Development of an energy efficiency benchmark for SMEs. The approach enables companies to directly compare their own key figures (turnover, energy, employees) with the industry average to assess their competitiveness.
