Studying in Germany – With Practical Experience
If you’re from abroad, have passed all individual courses in your prior education, and hold a language certificate accepted by us, you can begin a dual or cooperative degree program with us—in the KIA orKIAdirekt model. Whether you choose a direct or indirect (via 'Studienkolleg' (preparatory college)), you can find out on the website of anabin. KIA
Engineering program combined with recognition, chamber-certified vocational training (IHK or HWK).
KIAdirekt
A standard degree program with fixed, integrated practical study phases at a company during breaks from classes.

The KIA (sandwich-style) degree course at the HSZG enabled me to combine theory and practice directly with a company right from the start. I was able to gain valuable practical experience early on and was financially secure at the same time. Even after three years, I am still very glad that I chose the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course at the HSZG.
”How do I apply for the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course?
You meet all admission requirements and already have a language certificate accepted by our university
Every year starting in September (about one year before the apprenticeship begins), you can submit an application to one of our KIA partner companies for an apprenticeship or internship. You can find an overview here

You’ll need the contract with the KIA company to submit an application for a dual or cooperative degree programme at HSZG. Applications are accepted each year starting in May for the winter semester and starting in December for the summer semester.
Important: Undergraduate (degree) courses begin in the winter semester. Only a few Master's degree programmes start in the summer semester. Applications are submitted online via the application portal.
Once you have your training contract and your admission to the program, you’re part of the KIA family.
We’ll celebrate that at the KIA Shuttle Kickoff —the welcome event for all KIAs.
The four-week basic training program at the company usually begins on September 1. During this time, you’ll be trained in your duties and get to know your new coworkers.
You’ll also have the opportunity to attend the pre-training courses we offer.
Your dual or cooperative study program starts in October. You can find the exact schedule here.
We accept the following language certificates:
- German Language Proficiency Test for University Admission of International Applicants - DSH*
- Test of German as a Foreign Language - TestDaF*
- C1 or C2 Certificate from the Goethe-Institut
- Goethe-Institut’s “Großes” or “Kleines” Language Diploma
- German Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers of Education – Second Level
- telc German C1 University
- Degree certificate of the placement exam (including a grade overview), provided it was taken in German.
* For all degree programmes in the economic and Social Sciences, at least DSH-2 or TestDaF Level 4 (in all four sections)
* For all technical and engineering degree programmes: at least DSH-1 or TestDaF Level 3 (in all four sections)
Don't you have a language certificate yet?
If you cannot provide proof of any of the required certificates, we will provide you with targeted preparation at our 'Studienkolleg' (preparatory college) for the Placement Test (FSP) or the German Language Test for University Admission (DSH).
At the end of the program, you’ll receive a language certificate that you can use when submitting an application for the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course at HSZG. Even while you’re still in the 'Studienkolleg' (preparatory college), you can apply for an apprenticeship or internship at one of our KIA partner companies and attend your first job interviews.
