The Studium Fundamentale is an interdisciplinary educational program offered by the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. It supplements specialist studies with content that contributes to personal, social and professional development. In interdisciplinary modules, students deal with topics such as sustainability, digitalization, regionality, equal opportunities or personal development - regardless of their own degree course. The aim is to encourage students to think outside the box, strengthen key skills and better understand social contexts.
First university of applied sciences in Saxony with a mandatory Studium Generale
Since 1993, the Studium Fundamentale has been an integral part of all degree courses at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. It supplements the subject-specific training with interdisciplinary and general educational content, strengthens social and intellectual skills and broadens personal horizons. Together with the courses in foreign languages and ecology, the Studium Fundamentale forms a compulsory part of the curriculum - for a holistic, future-oriented course of study.
-A course of study that only imparts specialist knowledge falls short of the mark. The Studium Fundamentale is an expression of how we see ourselves as a university. We not only train qualified specialists, but also responsible individuals who are prepared to help shape society. The Studium Fundamentale has been part of the compulsory curriculum at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences for over 30 years. We were pioneers in Saxony. The Studium Fundamentale modules stimulate reflection, encourage curiosity and make connections visible that often remain hidden in specialist studies. They deal with topics such as sustainable development, digitalization, regionality, identity issues and linguistic and intercultural skills. In this way, our students acquire key skills that are essential in an increasingly complex world, both for professional life and for active participation in democratic processes. I am convinced that those who have the courage to think outside the box will also develop the foresight needed to not only manage change, but to actively shape it.
