We want to strengthen your ability to decide on a course of study!

from grade 2: Kinder Academy

from grade 5: DLR_School_Lab of the HSZG in Zittau - MINT experiments with curriculum relevance
The DLR_School_Lab at HSZG in Zittau is a 350 m² science lab for student experiments. It offers exciting hands-on experiences in science and technology for an entire class of students. At up to six experiment stations, students are introduced to the topics by college students and staff and then gradually take on a more active role themselves. To ensure that a visit to our DLR_School_Lab at HSZG is not disconnected from classroom instruction, individual topics are also aligned with the Saxon curriculum.

The goal is to promote and develop STEM skills in children and young people. To this end, there are innovative learning spaces in four areas of focus.

from grade 7: Mobile laboratory for schoolyards and project days
Under the motto “Knowledge on Board,” we bring digital technologies to schools. The “Airlab” mobile lab consists of a 7-meter-long Airstream trailer and a tow vehicle. Both vehicles have been configured for use with students.
In the Airlab, students in 7th grade and up engage in tinkering and creating 3D-printed components, as well as working with digital technology (laser cutters, microscopes, robotic arms, drones, etc.). Our student instructors and staff encourage a “do-it-yourself” approach. This way, learning takes place through “making” during the production process.

from grade 8: Hackdays in schools - ideas workshop with Make Your School
We foster interest in computer science, technology, and digital tools among 8th- and 9th-grade students through the creation of prototypes. During each three-day hackathon, up to 30 students from a single school develop prototypes based on their ideas for improving their daily school life.
This proven concept originates from “Make Your School” by Wissenschaft im Dialog gGmbH, with significant support from the Klaus Tschira Foundation. The HSZG has joined this nationwide network to introduce even more young people in Upper Lusatia to digital technology and spark their interest in STEM careers.
When?
The dates for the 2026–27 school year have not yet been set. Dates were coordinated individually during the registration process (see below).
Where?
At high schools and secondary schools in Eastern Saxony within a 75-km radius of HSZG. In the 2026/27 school year, the following schools participated: CWG Zittau, Curie-Gymnasium Görlitz, FSG Niesky, GSG Löbau, Landau-Gymnasium Weißwasser, FS Boxberg.
High schools in the Bautzen district interested in participating should please contact us!
What’s involved?
Fully equipped kits containing sensors, actuators, programmable electronics, and traditional craft materials will be brought to the schools by the HSZG.
Who?
Qualified young mentors will guide the students during the Hackdays. They follow an established concept developed by MYS (scientifically supported and refined over the years).
How?
We can hold a teacher workshop in advance with new teachers from the participating schools to clarify the schedule and framework for these project days.
Cost?
The three project days are once again free for schools.
Registration?
For the 26/27 school year, funding has been secured to run the program at four schools. Other schools should please submit a written expression of interest to the HSZG (see contact information below). We will get in touch with you.

from grade 8: School lesson in or with the HSZG
Individual lessons can take place in the university laboratories as part of the school curriculum. An excursion to the university laboratories is particularly suitable for the subjects of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer science.
If required, we can also come to the grammar school with a specialist subject. You are welcome to contact us.

Starting in 9th grade: Internship in the STEM labs at HSZG
You can complete your mandatory school internship with a focus on STEM starting in 9th grade at our DLR_School_Lab or in the engineering, business, and natural sciences faculties. The HSZG can also serve as a practical training partner for students at technical high schools (FOS). In addition, interested students can complete additional internships during school breaks. from grade 10: Try out studying - taster study day in the faculties
Students in grades 10–13 spend a day exploring their favorite degree programs and getting an inside look at HSZG.
After a welcome in the lecture hall, the students head to the various faculties to participate in customized programs. In addition to academic discussions, the program also includes exploring the HSZG, including the Görlitz and Zittau campuses, the student canteen, the library, and campus life.
The “Try Out College” program takes place from October through December and from March through May on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Starting in 10th grade: Complex Achievement and Special Learning Achievement
The HSZG is here to support you as a partner in completing your Complex Achievement (KL) and Special Learning Achievement (BELL). We can offer you experimental guidance, particularly in science, technology, and business-related topics. So once you’ve developed an idea for your topic, it’s good to ask your high school teachers if they have any contacts with faculty at the HSZG. If not, feel free to contact us (see below). We’ll get back to you as soon as possible to let you know what kind of support is available.
At some schools, the KL is completed in conjunction with attending regular undergraduate classes / courses. In this case, please contact our school liaison office first (see below) so that we can arrange your access to the faculties. This will make it easier for you to gain access to HSZG.

Starting in 10th grade: Early study program at HSZG
Would you like to take classes / courses at HSZG while you’re still in high school? This is generally possible through the early enrollment program. We recommend that you choose lectures in the first and second semesters. Please use the program pages to research the degree programme (or two degree programmes) that might be right for you and select the lecture(s) that interest you from the module catalog for each programme.
The requirements for admission to the early study program are set forth in Section 20(2) of the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) in its currently valid version.
Admission to the early study program at HSZG must always be applied for in advance. (Download the application form here, PDF)
The application must be completed in full, signed, and submitted along with the required supporting documents to the university’s Admissions Office by August 15 (for the winter semester) or February 15 (for the summer semester). Applications received after these deadlines will still be processed, but admission by the start of the semester cannot be guaranteed.
You will receive written admission for the desired modules, provided this is possible. The decision is made by the relevant faculty or the Admissions Office. You will then be enrolled as a non-degree seeking guest student; no semester fee is due.
You may also register for exams; this must be done at least 14 days before the start of the exam period (see the academic year schedule) via the Examination Office’s online form service.

from grade 10: DB Elektro - insights into engineering professions at Deutsche Bahn
“DB Elektro” is a series of events for high school students focused on electrical engineering and engineering careers, organized by Deutsche Bahn and Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.
The series begins on February 3, 2026, and new participants can join at any time. All you need to do is register.

What’s on the agenda?
An event takes place every month—either in person or online via MS Teams.
Activities range from learning about DB and the HSZG to exciting field trips to
construction sites and electrical labs, as well as hands-on insights into the Gotha operations center. Of course,
theoretical content—such as the basics of rail operations or Control and safety technology
—is also included. The highlight of the entire series will be the summer camp on the
campus of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences—the perfect place to gain insights into everyday student life

Competitions and Olympics
4th Zittau Sustainability Competition (Submissions due by March 19, 2027)
Contest Theme: Your school grounds as a habitat for plants, animals, and microorganisms. Create habitats for flowers, herbs, insects, birds, bats, hedgehogs, and many others!
What’s the situation on your school grounds? What kinds of habitats are there? Are they good for plants, animals, and microorganisms? Are there any interactions? Do you have any ideas for creating better conditions?
“Yes, we have ideas!”
Then present them to us—and, if possible, start putting them into action right away.
Your competition task:
- Present your ideas and highlight ways to implement them.
- Present your ideas on a B1-sized poster (70.7 cm x 100 cm).
- In addition to the poster, you’re welcome to submit photo documentation, videos, or flyers.
Who can participate?
Students in grades 5 through 12—as a project team, e.g., a school team, class team, or GTA team. Up to three submissions are allowed per school.
The following schedule is planned:
• Submission of the posters (with any additions, if necessary) by March 19, 2027, to Steffen Zücker (s.zuecker@hszg.de).
• Event to present the results and hold a formal awards ceremony for all participants on April 23, 2027, from 3:00 p.m. to approx. 5:30 p.m. at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Building ZII, 1st-floor foyer, Schliebenstraße 21, 02763 Zittau.
The entries will be presented publicly, and of course there will be prizes:
Submissions will be evaluated based on their approach to the topic, the ideas and implementation proposals, as well as the quality of the presentation format. Our jury will award prizes to the three good ideas (prize money: 1st place €200, 2nd and 3rd place €150 each). In addition, a prize selected by the public will be awarded (prize money €100). All participants will receive small prizes.
The Climate Competence Center of the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture, and Geology (LfULG) supports the competition and will be present on the day of the awards ceremony.

International Neisse-Elektro:
The “Neisse-Elektro” Electrical Engineering Olympiad is held annually in the spring (usually in March) in Zittau. Each year, approximately 30 students from German, Polish, and Czech schools in the Euroregion participate. These up-and-coming talents are nominated for this international Olympiad by the physics teachers at the participating schools. The event features workshops and field trips focused on electrical engineering, culminating in the final Olympiad competition on the Zittau campus. Visit the Neisse-Elektro website.
IT Young Talent Award:
The IT Young Talent Award is presented to teams of students who have developed creative IT projects to tackle both small and large challenges in everyday life, as well as in school or work. The award was established by InterNexum GmbH, is held under the patronage of Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer, and is supported by many partners from the business community. Students aged 14 or older attending general education schools are eligible to participate. The top finishers receive laptops and IT gadgets and have the opportunity to present their ideas at the IT Summer Festival. Here you’ll find all the information about the IT Young Talent Award.
Chemistry Specialists’ Camp and Chemistry Competitive Exam (starting in 9th grade):
The Chemistry Skills Competition is organized and conducted annually in cooperation with the Saxon Education Agency’s Bautzen Regional Office and our university’s Chemistry Department. The top student teams, which have advanced from the first stage of the competition at their high schools, compete under Olympic-style conditions in chemistry calculations and experimental tasks in the university lab to achieve the best possible good ranking.

Project days and school trips
These are themed programs with a focus on STEM that follow a “do-it-yourself” approach and are carried out as part of project days, field trips, and hiking days. During these activities, students will work on experimental tasks with a high degree of independence.
If you’re also looking for an attractive supporting program, the Oberlausitz vacation region offers many worthwhile destinations. Why not combine academic orientation with relaxation?
Our recommendations:
- Starting in 5th grade: DLR_School-Lab at the HSZG Junior Academy: Visit our student lab with a 350m² hands-on area for an entire school class (see above)
- Grade 8 and up: HSZG’s mobile lab with basic technical equipment as a makerspace (3D printing, laser cutting, prototyping with Arduino, robot arm programming, etc.) and rotating subject-specific equipment (see separate description)
- Starting in 8th grade: Climate and Energy Camp at the Knappenrode Energy Factory (up to 5 days; camp featuring STEM experiments and a makerspace—see video trailer below)
In addition:
- Meetings with the Student Advisory Service and the 'Studentenwerk' (student union) (BAföG (German financial aid for students) office, dormitories)
- Meetings with current students and visits to student clubs in Zittau or Görlitz
In addition, students can take advantage of the many recreational opportunities in and around Zittau and Görlitz:
- Excursions in the Three-Country Corner, e.g., Liberec Science Park “IQLandia”; Museums in Knappenrode, Görlitz, Zittau, Herrnhut, and Großschönau; Kulturinsel Einsiedel, the steam-powered Zittau narrow-gauge railway, hiking through the sandstone cliffs of the Zittau Mountains, a boat tour on the Neisse River, and Trixibad Großschönau

Apprenticeship at HSZG? Sure, that's possible here!
Like all fireworks, our events for schoolchildren are unique. We put a lot of commitment and time into the preparation and implementation. In order for our work to be well received by the students, we need your cooperation and support.
Participation in our events is free of charge for the students (travel, meals and accommodation costs are to be borne by the students themselves) and is agreed in writing. For the selection of the specialist topics, please use the topic catalog (see below under "Download"). Please make a pre-selection in agreement with the students. We strive to realize your topic requests.
Insurance protection: If you participate in school (e.g. as part of a school project week), the school’s accident insurance will take effect in the event of damage. Students who organize their participation at the university (privately) are insured against accidents through the university. Liability insurance is to be borne privately in each case.
The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is very interested in promoting young academics, especially in engineering and natural sciences. If you receive a rejection of an inquiry from us, then the i. i.e. R. due to the limited human and/or time resources. We ask for your understanding.
