The Fulbright program in the U.S. is designed for German students and graduates of universities of applied sciences and applied sciences degree programs who wish to deepen their academic knowledge during an academic year or a combined “study/internship stay” and who are committed to cultural exchange with the U.S.

Program Options

"Study Program": a 9-month study period at a U.S. host institution, preferably in the field of graduate studies (approx. 50 scholarships)

“Alumni Program”: a one-semester study period at a U.S. host university followed by a 3–5-month internship arranged through the Fulbright Commission. (Approx. 5 scholarships; primarily aimed at younger students.)

Scholarship Benefits

• Transatlantic travel expenses
• Tuition at the American university
• Subsidy for living expenses for the duration of the Study Program or the Alumni Program: Scholarship recipients contribute €300 per month toward living expenses; only a limited number of full scholarships are available to cover the entire cost of living
• Participation in the preparatory workshop
• Health and accident insurance (basic coverage)
• Scholarship funds are not available for work placement semesters or doctoral studies; internships are funded only as part of the combined “Alumni Program”

Application Period

May 15 through June 30 of the current year

Immigration to the U.S. following the stay in America is not possible under U.S. regulations within the framework of the Fulbright Program.

Requirements

• General university entrance qualification or university of applied sciences entrance qualification
• At least 5 academic semesters (including at least 2 at a German university) at the time of departure (August/September of the current year)
• Full-time student status at the host university in the U.S.
• Good academic achievement
• Good command of English
• German citizenship and permanent residence in Germany

Applications must be submitted to the International Office by June 23 of the current year

Semester Break in Kazakhstan?

The German-Kazakh University makes this possible and offers individual two-week modules for Bachelor’s or master’s programs as part of its Flying Faculty program.

Each year, the HSZG International Office awards travel expense grants to up to ten applicants, who can be reimbursed for actual travel expenses of up to €550 after completing the program.

Each semester, the GFPS partner organizations in Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic award scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students to enable them to study abroad or take a semester-long language course. Polish, Czech, Belarusian, and Ukrainian students can submit an application for a study period in Germany, while German students can submit an application for a semester in Poland or the Czech Republic.

Since 1994, the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation (SdpZ), established under the German-Polish Neighborhood Treaty, and the German-Czech Future Fund (DTZ) have been funding these scholarships. The ZEIT Foundation has been facilitating the admission of Belarusian students to Germany since 2004.

GFPS scholarship recipients benefit from

• a good financial scholarship that covers a good portion of their living expenses and allows them to experience local student life without financial hardship;
• personal support from members of city groups, who assist with finding housing, enrolment, opening a bank account, and initial orientation;
• scholarship recipient seminars such as the City Days and the GFPS Scholarship Recipient Seminar Forum, which facilitate the exchange of ideas about their own study projects and help scholarship recipients network with one another.
