Elite Monitor joint project successfully completed
After three years of intensive work, the Elitenmonitor project, a collaboration between research groups at the University of Leipzig, Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena and Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences came to a successful conclusion in July 2025. Funded by the Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Ostdeutschland (Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany), the project focused on the underrepresentation of East Germans in key leadership positions and was divided into four modules. In Leipzig, data on top management positions was collected and evaluated. In Jena, researchers conducted an elite survey to examine the perception of belonging and personal experiences of elite members. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences analyzed typical career advancement difficulties. Another Leipzig module evaluated tried-and-tested and new support approaches. The project culminated in May 2025 with a public conference entitled „Spitzenpositionen in Deutschland – offen für Vielfalt?“ (Top Positions in Germany – Open to Diversity?) supplemented by a two-day workshop for academic exchange at the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig. The project team is currently working on a comprehensive overview of the project results. The first publications have already been released and are available on the project website. The Elitenmonitor project provides both important empirical findings and a methodological basis for future research on elites and representation, thus contributing significantly to the socio-political debate on equal opportunities and democratic representation.
