About the degree program

Climate change and the scarcity of resources demand innovative solutions from engineers. On the Bachelor of Green Engineering in Zittau, you will become an expert in sustainable technologies and the circular economy. You will develop holistic approaches to design product lifecycles ecologically and drive forward environmentally friendly innovations. This forward-looking qualification will prepare you optimally for a job market that combines technical expertise with ecological awareness.

Interdisciplinary expertise for a sustainable circular economy

The degree program provides you with a unique combination of three core areas:

  • Process engineering for efficient and environmentally friendly processes to recover important secondary raw materials from waste, residual materials, production residues and biomass
  • Mechanical engineering for the development of sustainable recycling systems and consumer goods through circular design
  • Environmental engineering for keeping air, water and soil clean from harmful emissions

The balanced distribution of departments (40% process engineering and mechanical engineering each, 20% environmental engineering) creates a solid basis for interdisciplinary work. You will gain valuable experience during your studies through practical projects and an integrated internship semester. As a graduate, you will make an important contribution to the planet and embark on a fulfilling career that reflects your values and challenges you at the same time.

What's special: This course is optionally available as a cooperative KIAdirekt course. This means you work in a company (the cooperation partner) and earn money. The KIAdirekt variant at our university is explained in more detail here.

You can complete the Bachelor's degree in Green Engineering in 7 semesters. Or you can opt for a practice-integrated part of the course in the KIAdirekt concept. This starts as early as September with 4 weeks of practical experience in the company.

What is KIAdirekt?

KIAdirekt is a practice-integrated study model. It effectively combines theory and practice and is supported by the Saxon state government and leading companies.

You apply the knowledge you have acquired through practical work in the internship semester and in the company. The compulsory elective modules allow you to specialize further according to your preferences. Details

Course content

The seven-semester Bachelor of Green Engineering systematically combines technical fundamentals with environmental engineering specialization. In the first two semesters, you will lay a solid foundation in mathematics, thermodynamics, mechanics and materials engineering. At the same time, you will learn specific green engineering methods and gain your first practical experience in project workshops.

From the third semester onwards, you will focus increasingly on environmental engineering aspects: from life cycle assessment and production-integrated environmental protection to recycling technologies. You will spend the fifth semester as an internship semester in companies or research institutions. In the sixth and seventh semesters, you will deepen your knowledge through elective modules in areas such as bioeconomy or environmental bioprocess engineering and work on a scientific project before writing your Bachelor thesis on a current topic in sustainable engineering.

You plan and develop sustainable plants, systems and processes. You contribute your expertise in process engineering, mechanical engineering and environmental technology to create and implement environmentally friendly and efficient solutions.

Product development

You design and optimize innovative, environmentally friendly products for the circular economy. You will analyze materials, evaluate environmental impacts and develop solutions that leave a positive ecological footprint and conserve resources.

Quality and environmental management

You will develop and monitor strategies for compliance with environmental and quality standards. You support companies in fulfilling their environmental responsibility and implementing sustainable business practices.

Product Life Cycle Management

You analyze and optimize the entire life cycle of products from conception to disposal. You minimize ecological impact, promote recycling and support the development of closed material cycles.

Recycling and environmental technology

You plan, develop and implement systems for resource recovery and waste reduction. You promote closed cycles in industry and actively contribute to the conservation of resources and environmental relief.
