FURTHER KNOWLEDGE

a campaign by academic libraries in Germany

Under the motto "WEITER WISSEN. With us.", major academic libraries are launching a campaign to make their unique work for science and society more visible.

The aim of the "WEITER WISSEN" campaign is to highlight the social relevance of academic libraries, their special tasks, functions and diverse services as a prerequisite for innovative science. After all, independent and high-quality research, teaching and development in Germany can only be guaranteed in the future with broad political and social support for science-related infrastructures.

Academic libraries are the driving force behind open science and society. Together, they provide the central information infrastructures of science and continually drive them forward. The topics of open access, research data management, cultural heritage and digital long-term archiving cannot be shaped without the reliable services of academic libraries. And especially in times of increasing social uncertainty and attempts at disinformation, libraries are guarantors of free access to independently verified and fact-based knowledge. They therefore guarantee free science, education and culture.

Dr. Jens-Peter Gaul, Vice President of the German Library Association (dbv) and Secretary General of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK)

The campaign is supported by climate researcher Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif, the President of the Social Science Research Center Berlin Prof. Dr. Jutta Allmendinger, veterinarian Prof. Sonja Bröer, virologist Prof. Dr. Melanie Brinkmann, the President of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Prof. Dr. Christoph M. Schmidt, transformation researcher Prof. Maja Göpel, Prof. Dr. Christoph Markschies from the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, infectiologist Prof. Dr. Marylyn Addo, philosopher Prof. Dr. Julian Nida-Rümelin, migration researcher Prof. Dr. Naika Foroutan and Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert from the German Institute for Economic Research. In short statements, they explain what they believe academic libraries contribute to science and research.
