"EMC simply explained: basics and relevance" provides practical knowledge on electromagnetic compatibility
As part of the "Electrical Engineering Colloquium" series of events, the specialist event on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) took place on 20.05.2026. This was conducted by Mr. Markus Thoss and William Maloumby from Würth Elektronik eiSos GmbH &Co. Students, lecturers and interested guests were given a clear insight into the basics of EMC and its importance for the development of modern electronic systems.
The event began with the question of what EMC actually means. In addition to an introduction to the basic contexts, the historical development of EMC was also highlighted. This showed that EMC is no longer just a specialized topic in high-frequency technology, but plays a central role in almost all areas of modern electronics.
Another focus was on the legal requirements and the CE mark. Participants learned which directives and standards must be complied with for electronic products and why compliance with EMC requirements must be taken into account during the development phase.
Typical EMC transmitters and receivers were also clearly explained. Building on this, the topics of emitted interference and interference immunity were dealt with. The second part of the event focused on radiated and conducted interference. Typical measurement setups were used to demonstrate how electromagnetic interference is recorded and evaluated. The demonstrations on the effect of shielding were particularly interesting. The experiments made it impressively clear how strongly even small design changes can influence the electromagnetic behavior of a system.
The event thus offered participants a successful mix of theoretical principles and practical demonstrations. The Electrical Engineering Colloquium once again showed how current engineering topics can be communicated in an understandable and application-oriented way.
We would like to thank Mr. Franz Xaver Schleuder(Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences) for his technical support!
