Carl August Schramm Prize - Review

Review of "The Carl August Schramm Prize awarded by the Institut für Bauwesen Zittau e.V. for outstanding academic achievements at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences 2003 - 2014"

Review of the publication "The Carl-August-Schramm-Prize awarded by the Institut für Bauwesen Zittau e.V. for outstanding academic achievements at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences 2003 - 2014"

Edited by Henning Löber and Peter Prohl. - Zittau: Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, 2016 - 35 p. / ISBN 978-3-941521-21-6 ( Wissenschaftliche Berichte Heft 124, Nr. 2644...2657 )

This publication has a simple structure: The editors' preliminary remarks are followed by the article "Carl August Schramm" by Andreas Bednarek, the statutes for awarding the "Carl August Schramm Prize", the prizewinners 2003 - 2014, acknowledgments and excerpts of the prize-winning works and, as an appendix, a transcript for making a medal for the Carl August Schramm Prize.

The award is for outstanding Diplom, Master's and Bachelor theses from the Department of Civil Engineering with the study programs Architecture, Civil Engineering, Technical Building Management/Energy Technology, Housing and Real Estate Management.

The theses should be as interdisciplinary as possible and take a holistic approach. The award is named after Carl August Schramm (1806-1869).

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, the Zittau native studied architecture at the building school of the Dresden Academy of Art under Joseph Thürmer and August Benjamin Siegel, went to Karl Friedrich Schinkel in Berlin after successfully completing his degree and then took over the construction management of St. John's Church in Zittau, which was built according to Schinkel's plans. Thus qualified, Schramm worked as a successful architect in Upper Lusatia (Baugewerkenschule Zittau 1840-1845, Zittau Town Hall 1840-1845, Kamenz Town Hall 1842 etc.).

He became town planning director in 1845 and director of the Königlich Sächsische Baugewerkenschule Zittau in 1855, a predecessor of today's Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz.

Andreas Bednarek's essay pays tribute to Schramm's pedagogical concern to impart a holistic attitude to his students. It was intended to prepare them for the growing demands of the second half of the 19th century.

The jury for the "Carl August Schramm Prize" is made up of the following personalities: the presidents of the Chamber of Architects and the Chamber of Engineers of Saxony, the head of the Fachhochschulen department of the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts, the Vice-Rector for Research at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the Director of the Zittau Institute of Civil Engineering.

The prize consists of a certificate, prize money (€1000) and the Carl August Schramm Medal. It was designed by the sculptor Maya Gaber, then a student in Prof. Göbel's sculpture class at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle.

Limited funds did not allow the prize-winning works to be printed in this volume. Their place is taken by the reviews of the respective supervisors. They describe their content, methodology and evaluation. The architecture Diplom theses are an exception. Their language is drawing. They are also reproduced in extracts. A selection shows the variety of topics:

  • Nicol Naunapper: Design of the SOS Children's Village Pemba Moçambique (2003, Architecture)
  • Marc Simon, Sebastian Franz: Development of planning documents for the renovation of the Weberkirche in Zittau, bell tower and roof construction (2007, civil engineering)
  • Benjamin Schaar: Energetic refurbishment of prefabricated houses of the company Christoph & Unmack AG Niesky ( 2011, air conditioning and building physics )
  • Felix Leda: Portfolio development concept for housing companies in low-demand markets - an empirical study using the example of Wohnungsgenossenschaft Görlitz e. G. (2014, Housing and Real Estate Management )

A structural change at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences led to the dissolution of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in 2012 and the Institute of Civil Engineering in 2014. The last Carl August Schramm Prize was awarded in 2014. The brochure also provides an insight into the performance of the former Faculty of Civil Engineering.

The exemplary typographic design of the brochure was in the hands of Hannelore Heise, a long-time lecturer in typeface/typography at Burg Giebichenstein - University of Art and Design Halle, in collaboration with Franziska Cobet.

The brochure can be obtained at a cost of €20.00 from Prof. Dr.-Ing. Henning Löber, Barbarossaplatz 6, 01309 Dresden(loeber.dresden(at)web.de)
