The Rotary Club Dreiländereck Oberlausitz visited the DLR_School_Lab at the HSZG to gain an insight into career prospects and the school laboratory.
The second "Career Carousel" organized by the Rotary Club Dreiländereck Oberlausitz took place at DLR_School_Lab Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz in spring. 18 pupils from the SCHKOLA school network took the opportunity to find out about careers and study opportunities in a practical way.
After a welcome address by Vice President for Research, Transfer and International Affairs, Prof. Sophia Keil, and the President of the Rotary Club Dreiländereck Oberlausitz and Managing Director of Schkola, Ute Wunderlich, the event kicked off with a varied programme from the university.
The participants were first given an insight into the study opportunities at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and were able to get hands-on in the DLR_School_Lab. In various experiments on topics such as heat pumps, microscopy, vacuum, infrared radiation and heat, scientific content was conveyed in a clear and practical way. At the same time, Robert Viertel from the school contact point provided information on how to decide on a course of study. In addition, the members of the Rotary Club were given an insight into the ZukLOS education initiative and the work of the DLR_School_Lab in a separate presentation by Dr. Thomas Fester.
Afterwards, a shared snack of sushi and refreshing drinks provided space for informal discussions before the second part of the event began.
Formats such as the career carousel are an important component in providing young people with guidance at an early stage. As a university, we see it as our task to make study and career paths tangible and to arouse curiosity for science and innovation.
The second part of the event focused on direct dialog with people from different professional fields. In alternating rounds of talks, the pupils were able to gain an insight into various activities, including professions such as detective superintendent, priest, social and education manager, architect and construction planner.
The event was rated positively across the board by the students. They particularly appreciated the practical insights, the open discussions in small groups and the opportunity to ask specific questions and make initial contacts. In some cases, it was even possible to arrange internships. The special atmosphere in the DLR_School_Lab and the support provided by students and federal volunteers also contributed to the success of the event.
It is impressive to see how quickly the young people gain confidence through direct exchange and begin to develop their own career ideas.
We would like to thank the Rotary Club Dreiländereck Oberlausitz and especially Ute Wunderlich for the program idea and preparation. Finally, we would like to thank the Friends of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences for their financial support of the evening.
Thanks to all the people who presented their professions at the event and to the university staff who supervised the scientific experiments and organized the evening.
