New Partnership Boosts Biotechnology at HSZG
The HSZG and the Görlitz-based biotechnology company Sysmex Partec are joining forces on a long-term basis to combine their expertise in research, teaching, and the promotion of young talent.
Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) and Sysmex Partec have signed a cooperation agreement to establish a long-term framework for their collaboration in research and teaching. Until now, contacts have primarily arisen through individual Bachelor theses. The appointment of Prof. Dr. Elisa Wirthgen has opened up new areas of academic collaboration. Cell biology and immunology are among her areas of expertise. A discussion between Sysmex Partec and the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences ultimately provided the impetus for the new partnership.
Expertise and infrastructure complement each other
Both partners bring different strengths to the collaboration. Sysmex Partec can use HSZG’s infrastructure to provide specific cells that are used in Görlitz to validate new methods.
Here, we are bringing together areas of expertise that complement each other very well: our focus on cell biology and immunology, and Sysmex Partec’s experience in cell analysis. This regular exchange opens up new opportunities for joint projects and, at the same time, provides valuable impetus for research and teaching.
”Examine thousands of cells in a short amount of time
Flow cytometry is an important method in this field. It makes it possible to analyze thousands of individual cells in a very short time and to visualize their different characteristics. This makes it a key technology for better understanding biological processes and developing new diagnostic and biotechnological applications.
At the same time, this collaboration opens up new opportunities for the biotechnology programs at HSZG. Current research questions and practical applications of cell analytics can thus be integrated more deeply into the curriculum—in the bachelor’s program in Molecular Biotechnology as well as in the Master's degree programmes in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Biotechnology and applied ecology.
Final dissertations also offer students the opportunity to address issues relevant to the business world and gain insights into the practical application of modern cell analysis.
Sysmex Partec Awards Its First "Deutschlandstipendium" Scholarship
Sysmex Partec will also be supporting the HSZG in the future through a Germany Scholarship. This marks the first time the company has provided funding to a student at the university in this way. The scholarship amounts to 300 euros per month: Sysmex Partec, as a private sponsor, covers half of the amount, while the federal government covers the other half.
