Understanding science sometimes also means touching, trying things out, and experimenting for yourself. That’s exactly what the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences focuses on when it brings research out of the labs and into the community.

The Zittau City Festival showcased what this can look like: On July 11, the market square was transformed into a “Science Mile” as part of “Oha! – Science Adventure.” Research institutions and other regional stakeholders invited children, families, and interested members of the public to try things out, make discoveries, and engage directly with researchers.

“Oha!” was organized by Hi!Lusatia e. V. in collaboration with the City of Zittau and the Saxon Agency for Structural Development (SAS). A scavenger hunt led children through various stations along the science mile, where they could solve puzzles and collect stamps.

The HSZG brought research to life through a wide variety of hands-on activities. At the Mobile Learning Center, guests could get hands-on experience with 3D printing, laser cutters, drones, and robotic arms. The DLR_School_Lab invited visitors to conduct experiments, and anyone who wanted to could even solder their own jewelry.

At the marketplace, the university also showcased various fields of research: The Upper Lusatia Future Learning Center (ZukLOS) presented new perspectives on learning in the region, Prof. Jens Weber provided insights into surface research, and at the booth of the Institute for Health, Ageing, and Technology (GAT), visitors could explore technology from the AAL lab and learn more about the WellCare project. The spectrum thus ranged from technological developments to research approaches for a self-determined life.

Experimenting, trying things out, asking questions: The hands-on activities provided more than a few “wow” moments.

In addition to the research opportunities, “Oha!” also offered a chance to learn about degree programs at HSZG. The Student Advising Office answered questions about degree programs, the application process, and studying in Zittau and Görlitz.

The HSZG was also represented on stage: during a talk on the teacher education program for secondary schools with a focus on special education , interested attendees learned more about the program and career prospects for future teachers.

Programs like “Oha!” create opportunities to experience science outside of labs and lecture halls. Hands-on experimentation opens up different ways of engaging with research than texts or lectures. Through direct conversation, researchers can demonstrate what they’re working on and why their topics are relevant to everyday life and the region.
