Staging a play involves weeks of rehearsals beforehand, as well as coordination with the director, the dramaturgy team, the technical staff, and the workshops—yet our theater series, which we’ll be staging this season starting in October in Görlitz and Zittau, requires no weeks of preparation at all. “Selfies of a Utopia” thus challenges the conventions of theater.
The rules are incredibly simple: the writer and director, Nicola Bremer, writes a new script for each episode. Three actors perform this text—without ever having read it beforehand. Spontaneously, they repeatedly carry out stage directions that the director, seated in front of the stage, holds aloft on signs. The improv series is, above all, funny and not at all contrived. And so the young writer and director creates snapshots of the present and, together with the ensemble, develops a strictly regulated form of anarchic entertainment that frees the actors from roles and rehearsals, yet at the same time thoroughly enslaves them. No episode of the series builds on the previous one. Audience members can jump in on any of the individual evenings.
In 2018, Nicola Bremer was nominated by the magazine *Theater heute* as Best Emerging Artist for *Selfies of a Utopia *. So forget Netflix! Come to the theater—the series kicks off on October 13 in Zittau and on October 14 in Görlitz!
New for this season are last-minute tickets for students from 15 minutes before the start of the performance for €5.00.
During the 2021–2022 season, the Gerhart-Hauptmann Theater would like to reach out to students interested in theater with a special program. Director and actor Eike Zastrow, who is currently studying culture and management at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, is building a bridge between the university and the theater with a one-year theater club for students.
The project isn’t just for those who love being in the spotlight and can’t wait to get a taste of the theater. Anyone who enjoys writing, telling stories, can imagine designing a set or costumes, or would like to contribute in other ways to putting on a play with the help of professionals is welcome.
Interested? On Thursday, October 21, at 7:00 p.m., an information session with Artistic Director Dr. Daniel Morgenroth and Eike Zastrow will take place at the Görlitz Foyercafé, where you can learn more about the project.
As a little preview, students interested in theater can get to know one another during a group viewing of the first episode of the theater series *Selfies einer Utopie* by Nicola Bremer on Thursday, October 14. Meet Eike Zastrow at 7:15 p.m. in front of the Apollo Görlitz.
