Research assistant (m/f/d) in the sub-project "Legal framework and material flow management of bioCDR cascades" - Keyword: 51-2025 bioCDR cascades -

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences | Application deadline: 08.12.2025

At the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, at the Zittau Institute for Process Development, Circular Economy, Surface Technology, Natural Materials Research (ZIRKON), a position (20 hours/week) is available as of 01.01.2026 as a

Research Associate (m/f/d)
in the sub-project "Legal framework and material flow management of bioCDR cascades"
- Reference: 51-2025 bioCDR cascades -

to be filled for a limited period until 30.06.2027.

The BioCas research project develops an effective governance framework for the sustainable development and expansion of biomass-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (bioCDR) cascades. It combines their further development with an interdisciplinary analysis of current multi-level governance processes using co-design, policy analysis, assessment approaches, case studies and optimization models. BioCas understands governance as the interplay of international and local levels, economic control mechanisms and non-state actors, standards and certificates. The involvement of biomass suppliers, industry associations and social groups creates a roadmap for effective multi-level governance of sustainable bioCDR cascades. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences contributes its expertise in environmental, energy and climate protection law, energy and material flow analysis and regional transformation processes in work packages 1.1, 1.2, 3.2 and 3.3.

The post holder will have the following tasks in particular:

  • Collaboration in work packages 1.1 "Legal framework and context factors" and 1.2 "Indicator calibration and fact sheet preparation",
  • Analysis of the legal framework (e.g. KrWG, AVV, HKNR, TEHG, EU-ZuVO) with regard to conducive and obstructive factors for bioCDR cascades,
  • Compilation and evaluation of environmental legislation on biomass material flows (biowaste, agricultural residues, waste wood, etc.),
  • Participation in the definition and characterization of regional case studies for bioCDR cascades in Lausitz,
  • Participation in the calibration of indicators and creation of fact sheets for selected bioCDR cascades,
  • Use and processing of data from legal registers, registers, information platforms and material flow databases,
  • Collaboration on WP 3.2 "Policy instruments and technical-legal requirements" and WP 3.3 "Methodological review of GHG accounting and material flow accounting",
  • Analysis and comparison of GHG accounting approaches (Product Carbon Footprint, GHG Protocol, EPD, CRCF, EBEV, etc.),
  • Scientific documentation, data preparation and participation in the publication of fact sheets and data sets in accordance with the FAIR principles.

The following knowledge and skills are required

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master's/Diplom) in the field of environmental sciences, environmental law, environmental or resource management, sustainability sciences or related disciplines,
  • Knowledge of environmental, energy and climate protection law, in particular recycling management, pollution control and energy law,
  • Experience in material flow analysis, greenhouse gas balancing or material flow modeling,
  • Confident handling of scientific data sources, legal regulations and environmental statistics,
  • Ability to work analytically, interdisciplinary and conceptually,
  • very good written and spoken German.

In addition, the following are desirable

  • In-depth knowledge in the innovative field of negative emission technologies and CO2 removal from the atmosphere (Carbon dioxide removal -CDR),
  • Knowledge of tools such as Umberto, AnyLogic or comparable software for material flow and process modeling,
  • Experience with policy analysis, consultation procedures or the Science-Policy-Practitioner-Interface,
  • good written and spoken English,
  • Interest in bioeconomic and CDR-relevant transformation processes in the Lausitz structural change region.

We expect from you

  • A structured, solution- and service-oriented and independent way of working,
