What's it really like to be a student in Görlitz?
In the new episode of the hi@hszg podcast, Theresa, Bene, and Henning talk about why they chose to study in Görlitz and what studying means to them beyond lectures and exams.
So far, the hi@hszg podcast has mostly focused on individual degree programmes. This time, Vicky takes a look at the bigger picture: How do you find your place at the university? What helps you settle in? And what makes studying in Görlitz special beyond lectures and exams? She discusses these topics with Theresa from Tourism Management, Bene from Social Work, and Henning from culture and management.
Three Routes to Görlitz
All three ended up at HSZG through different paths. After attending an open house at a large university, Theresa initially even had doubts about whether college was the right choice for her at all. It wasn’t until she visited the open house at the university in Görlitz that her impression changed. The smaller campus and the intimate atmosphere ultimately convinced her to study Tourism Management at the HSZG.
Then I came here and immediately fell in love with the university. The small campus and the atmosphere just felt right.
”Bene is studying Social Work and is the first person in his family to have earned a high school diploma and to be attending college. In this interview, he explains why small groups and approachable people to turn to were particularly important to him in finding his way in everyday college life.
I'm the first person in my family to ever graduate from high school. That's exactly why it was important for me to study in small groups and to have people who take the time to help me.
”Henning is originally from Leipzig, but his family has roots in Upper Lusatia. Today, he is studying culture and management in Görlitz and particularly appreciates the opportunities to pursue his own interests and combine his studies with practical experience and time abroad.
I noticed so many new, lively, and cool things in Görlitz—and just how beautiful the city is. So I made up my mind pretty quickly.
”More Than Just Lectures and Exams
The episode also explores what it’s like to be a student in everyday life. The three discuss personalized support, field trips, work placement semesters, different types of exams, and the extent to which students can help shape their classes / courses. It also becomes clear that student involvement is possible—if students actively take advantage of it.
And, of course, there’s more to college life than just the campus. Theresa, Bene, and Henning talk about life in Görlitz, college sports, student initiatives, recreational activities, and the city’s close proximity to Poland. They also discuss housing and financing their studies.
