Mandauhöfe in Zittau will be the location of the Junior Academy
Future learning location Oberlausitz: DLR_School_Lab of the HSZG takes shape
Extracurricular education is a key component of regional structural development and securing a skilled workforce, as well as an opportunity for successful structural change. At the same time, it offers a way to draw the attention of young people—as potential students—to the diverse range of degree programmes offered by Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The Prorectorate for Education and International Affairs aims to establish a region-wide “Future Learning Center Upper Lusatia .” The goal of the “Upper Lusatia Learning Hub for the Future” initiative is, in particular, to equip diverse and innovative learning spaces in the extracurricular sector with programs that are future-oriented and focused on regional development.
As part of the close cooperation between Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) at the Zittau site, an initial milestone has been reached: one of these extracurricular learning centers is the Junior Academy, which will become the HSZG’s DLR_School_Lab.
During an on-site visit, the HSZG welcomed Dr. Christoph Pawek, the director of the DLR_School_Lab Berlin. He will support the university in establishing the local School_Lab with his expertise and many years of experience. Together with the Vice President for Education and International Affairs, Professor Dr. rer. pol. Sophia Keil, the university’s Chancellor, Dipl.-Jur. Karin Hollstein, and HSZG staff members, the future collaboration was discussed in depth during a half-day workshop. The opportunity was also taken to tour the DLR’s new test facility in Zittau and to exchange ideas with DLR staff.
"As part of the development of future learning locations, we will actively shape the future of children in Upper Lusatia. We will realize the Junior Academy in the Zittau Mandauhöfe together with the DLR. I am pleased about the start of a very good cooperation and look forward to working together," summarizes Professor Dr. Sophia Keil.
”The next step in this process is the signing of a cooperation agreement. The design of the rooms and the conception of the teaching and learning offers can begin immediately afterwards. The future topics will be developed together with teachers, pupils and representatives of research institutions and companies in the region to show how the future can be proactively shaped.

In the future, pupils of all grades will experimentally familiarize themselves with topics of aerospace, green engineering, nature and environmental protection as well as new technologies on 350m² of the Zittau Mandauhöfe.
