Exchange, classification and joint further development
On January 8, 2026, the 16th training network meeting of the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences took place in the Celsiuz of the HSZG. Numerous representatives of the KIA cooperation companies, the university and other partners took the opportunity to exchange ideas in person.
The event focused on the structural realignment of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, which Rector Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kratzsch outlined in a keynote speech. It became clear that the KIA training-integrated study model will remain a central component of the university's development in the future and will be further strengthened.
The KIA study model is a central component of our university development. Especially in the course of the restructuring, close cooperation with our business partners is crucial in order to sustainably combine practical teaching, research and securing skilled workers. I am very pleased with the positive feedback from our partners on our planned restructuring.
An overview of the current status and ongoing developments in the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course was provided by KIA officer Kristin Groß. The KIA model has established itself over many years as a sustainable combination of training, study and practice and makes an important contribution to securing skilled workers in the region.
Particularly in the current restructuring process, it is important for us to involve our cooperation partners at an early stage, to inform them transparently and to encourage them to participate. KIA thrives on mutual exchange - the university and companies benefit directly from each other. I am therefore all the more pleased that so many companies took the opportunity to exchange ideas right at the beginning of the year. This is a very positive signal for the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course.
The initial focus was on cooperation in everyday KIA life. The companies confirmed the high quality of the KIA model, in particular the close ties between the students and the companies, the very high takeover rate, the low drop-out rate and the added value of two degrees. The individual support and the family structure within the KIA network were also highlighted several times as clear strengths.
Another focus was on the recruitment and visibility of the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course. Specific measures were discussed, such as the increased use of success stories, video formats and podcasts, a clearer differentiation from other dual study models and a more intensive presence at trade fairs, in schools and at careers advice centers. It was also emphasized that Zittau should be made more visible as an attractive place to live and learn.
In the discussion on the future and further development of the KIA model, KIA was classified as a low-threshold entry into academic education and an important instrument for securing skilled workers in the region. Among other things, a stronger nationwide visibility, the examination of further suitable courses of study and an even closer integration of theory and practice were discussed.
The network meeting was rounded off with informal discussions, a joint snack buffet and guided tours of the DLR School Lab and selected laboratories at the university.
The training alliance meeting has once again shown how valuable the close exchange between university and practice is - and that the KIA (sandwich-style) degree course can be further developed on a strong common basis.
Special thanks go to all KIA cooperation partners for the open and constructive exchange. We would also like to thank the Celsiuz team for their provision and support on site, the moderators of the exchange rounds for their professional guidance of the discussions and Ms Sikorska for her organizational support.
Our thanks also go to Dr. Fester for the guided tour of the DLR School Lab and to Wolfgang Meinck and Ondrej Švarc for the exciting insights provided during the lab tours.
