E-car meets Zittau

A presentation on electromobility provides insights into the history of its development, everyday life with e-cars and market opportunities.

Structural change, climate change, technological change... our habits are slowly changing. The topic of electromobility is gaining more and more attention and more than 10 percent of newly registered cars in Germany are already pure e-cars. But how does this work in our rural region and what experiences have already been made?

Markus Weiland talked about this in an inspiring presentation to around 20 participants on the evening of July 8. He introduced the topic of electromobility and reported on the history and market development, but also on electromobility in everyday life, charging and payment as well as the special features in the border triangle and new market opportunities.

Originally from Bavaria, trained as a media computer scientist at TU Dresden, with professional experience in North America, Markus Weiland returned to Germany in 2015 to found a start-up and then to Zittau. As a software developer with a wide range of skills, he brings with him the pragmatic way of "getting things done and not talking too much".

On a public holiday in 2018, on a highway somewhere between Zittau and Bavaria...

... after two breakdowns of his diesel vehicle, he started looking into electric cars and making the switch. The beginnings of electromobility date back to 1895. At that time, electric cars accounted for around 50 percent of total traffic in some places. However, it was the invention of the electric starter motor that led to the rise of the combustion engine.

But now e-mobility is becoming more and more widespread. The end of the combustion engine is predicted for 2030. Car manufacturers such as Volvo, Jaguar and others want to sell only electric models by then. The VW Group also wants to increase the proportion of electric drives to 70% by 2030. At the end of December 2020, 14% of new car registrations in Germany had an exclusively electric drive.

Everyday life with e-cars...

... is characterized by many advantages in driving behavior as well as a high level of comfort. In the presentation, the e-car was discussed in detail from various perspectives such as consumption, charging technology, costs, battery life, vehicle prices, safety and practical tips.

Critical aspects and those in need of improvement, such as charging points being parked up and incorrect or inadequate signage, were also addressed. A comparison was also made with a "normal" filling station. Charging station maps and coverage in the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany were also examined. New business areas were also highlighted using existing examples and rounded off the exciting presentation.

E-car regulars' table

In the course of the discussion, the idea arose to set up a regulars' table for drivers of e-cars and other interested parties. We are looking forward to it and invite you to join us! So if you would like to join us, please contact us via .

If you are interested, we can make the presentation available.

Many thanks to Markus Weiland and all participants for their interest and for the lively discussion. The event was organized by Saxony5 and the Volkshochschule Dreiländereck.
