Hands-On Biomedical Research
At the Government Quarter Open House in Dresden, the HSZG demonstrated how biomedical research is conducted in Zittau, from pipetting to observing living cells.
Just how small are the volumes of liquid used in laboratory work? And what do living cells look like under a microscope? During the Government Quarter Open House in Dresden, visitors had the opportunity to explore these questions for themselves. At the invitation of the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture, and Tourism, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences presented the ESF-funded “Toolbox Biomedicine” project and the biomedical research conducted by the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences .
Prof. Dr. Elisa Wirthgen was on site along with the two doctoral students, Pia Schubert and Ali Al Hamad. Pipetting, in particular, sparked great interest among the children. Images from live-cell imaging and a look through the microscope also provided a glimpse into how biomedical research is conducted in Zittau.
On several occasions, people expressed genuine surprise that biomedical and molecular biology research is also conducted in Zittau in this form. This has shown me once again how important it is to raise the profile of this aspect of our university.
”Four Areas of Expertise in Biomedical Research
In the “Toolbox Biomedicine” project, an interdisciplinary team is developing a modular system for biomedical diagnostics and therapy. To this end, the project brings together four closely interrelated fields: technical biochemistry, microbiology, organic chemistry, and cell biology. The individual building blocks are designed to be combined in such a way that new approaches to diagnostics and therapy can be developed and investigated. The goal is to contribute to research on chronic diseases.
The presentation in Dresden thus not only offered insights into specific research methods; it also highlighted the biomedical expertise available at HSZG and its Zittau campus, as well as the diversity of the university’s research landscape.
