The Rotary Club Dreiländereck Oberlausitz visited the DLR_School_Lab at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) to give pupils a practical insight into careers and study paths.
The "Career Carousel" took place there for the second time in spring. 18 pupils from the SCHKOLA school network took the opportunity to get to know different professional fields and talk directly to experts.
The event was opened by Prof. Dr Sophia Keil, Vice President for Research, Transfer and International Affairs, and Ute Wunderlich, President of the Rotary Club Dreiländereck Oberlausitz and Managing Director of SCHKOLA.
At the beginning, the participants were given an overview of the study opportunities at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. They were then able to get hands-on in the DLR_School_Lab and experiment with various scientific and technical topics. The focus was on heat pumps, microscopy, vacuum technology, infrared radiation and thermal processes.
The content was deliberately conveyed in a practical and vivid way in order to make scientific correlations directly tangible.
In addition, Robert Viertel from the school contact point provided information on ways to find out more about studying and supported the young people with questions about career decision-making. Dr. Thomas Fester also presented the ZukLOS education initiative and the work of the DLR_School_Lab.
A joint snack afterwards provided an opportunity for an informal exchange between pupils, teachers and guests.
The second part of the event focused on direct dialog with representatives from various professional fields. In alternating rounds of talks, the young people were given insights into the practical side of things - including the criminal investigation department, parish office, social and education management, architecture and construction planning.
The format allowed participants to ask individual questions and develop concrete ideas of possible career paths.
The event was very well received by the students. The practical insights, the open discussions in small groups and the opportunity to make direct contact with experts were particularly emphasized. In some cases, internships have already been arranged.
The special learning atmosphere in the DLR_School_Lab and the support provided by students and federal volunteers contributed significantly to the success of the event.
Formats such as the career carousel show very clearly how career guidance can succeed: through real encounters, practical insights and direct exchange. As a university, we see it as a central task to give young people guidance at an early stage and to make science and study paths tangible. The DLR_School_Lab offers an ideal space for this, in which curiosity can arise and concrete future prospects can develop.
The event was rated positively across the board by the students. They particularly appreciated the practical insights, the open discussions in small groups and the opportunity to ask specific questions and make initial contacts. In some cases, it was even possible to arrange internships. The special atmosphere in the DLR_School_Lab and the support provided by students and federal volunteers also contributed to the success of the event.
It is impressive to see how quickly the young people gain confidence through direct exchange and begin to develop their own career ideas.
We would like to thank the Rotary Club Dreiländereck Oberlausitz and especially Ute Wunderlich for the program idea and preparation. Finally, we would like to thank the Friends of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences for their financial support of the evening.
Thanks to all the people who presented their professions at the event and to the university staff who supervised the scientific experiments and organized the evening.
