Exchange with Taiwan further intensified
Director of the Education Department at the Taipei Representative Office in Germany Visits HSZG
On May 19, 2026, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences welcomed Sabine Chin Ying Weng, Director of the Education Department at the Taipei Representative Office in the Federal Republic of Germany, for a discussion on shared perspectives in education, research, and International Affairs.
The delegation was received by Rector Prof. Dr. Alexander Kratzsch, Prof. Dr. Małgorzata Maćkowiak, Vice President for Education and Sustainability, Inna Hauf from the Office of Research, Transfer, and International Affairs, and Susanne Fentzel from the Rector’s Office for University development and communication.
The discussions focused on international cooperation, new degree programs related to the semiconductor industry, international talent, and joint higher education projects with Taiwanese partners. Particular attention was given to the question of how universities can train international professionals for Saxony’s future-oriented technology sectors and retain them in the region over the long term.
Rector Prof. Dr. Alexander Kratzsch emphasized the university’s special role in Saxony’s current development:
We want to use our skills from different scientific fields to train specialists for the high-tech cluster and work together with industry and science to advance future technologies. At the same time, we want to contribute our research strengths to these processes in a targeted manner and further expand international cooperation in research and development.
”During the discussion, the HSZG presented its key research areas in energy, the circular economy, resource technologies, semiconductor technologies, and international degree programs. Current developments surrounding the growing Upper Lusatia science region were also presented, including institutions such as the German Center for Astrophysics, the DLR, and other research institutes in the region.
The university’s unique location at the tri-border area of Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic also played an important role in the discussion. The delegation gained insights into the university’s international focus as well as the close ties between science, business, and regional development.
I think now is a good time to further expand the cooperation between Saxony and Taiwan. Saxony is currently very well recognized in Taiwan, especially in connection with the semiconductor industry.
”In addition to the discussions in the Senate Hall, the program also included tours of the Green Classroom, the Makerspace, and the HSZG’s DLR_School_Lab. During these tours, the delegation gained insights into hands-on science communication and innovative learning opportunities for students.
The visit builds on numerous activities involving Taiwan that HSZG has undertaken over the past two years. These include delegation trips, international events, new partnerships with Taiwanese universities, and the development of new degree programs related to the semiconductor industry.
Back in April 2026, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech). This will be followed in June 2026 by an exchange with a delegation from the Ursuline Wenzao University of Foreign Languages in Kaohsiung to discuss student exchanges and collaborations on a semiconductor curriculum. A visit to National Dong Hwa University in Hualien is also planned for September 2026, which will focus on joint opportunities in the field of tourism.
During the exchange, it also became clear that both sides see potential for joint initiatives to support young talent, develop international curricula, and offer practice-oriented training programs in the semiconductor industry.
The discussions made it clear that a strong network of science, innovation, and international exchange is increasingly taking shape between Saxony and Taiwan. Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences would like to continue expanding this network together with its partners.
