About the degree program
As one of the strongest research universities for applied sciences in Germany, the HSZG is also a reliable partner for the semiconductor industry. Thanks to its proximity to Silicon Saxony with its many semiconductor technology companies in Saxony, the HSZG is part of a highly dynamic area of innovation with supra-regional appeal.
Practical research and innovative solutions characterize this degree program for the jobs of the future in the chip industry. Your future employers have helped to develop this course. Not only will you learn the knowledge of the digital future, but you will also come into contact with your employers early on, with an attractive salary.
Study the digital future
Semiconductor technology is at the heart of digitalization. Without powerful chips, smartphones, electric vehicles and artificial intelligence would be inconceivable. The Bachelor of Mechatronics for Manufacturing qualifies you for the development and optimization of automated manufacturing processes in this key industry. With the advantage of being located in the Silicon Saxony region, you will benefit from short distances to industry and excellent career prospects.
What you can expect during your studies
The degree program teaches you interdisciplinary skills from three core areas:
- Engineering fundamentals: Electrical Engineering, Mechanics, Computer Science, Robotics and Materials Science
- Semiconductor technology: thin film and clean room technology, materials and chip production processes
- Production and quality management: process automation, measurement technology, data analysis and maintenance
A special feature is the binational structure. You study together with the Technical University of Liberec (TUL) in the Czech Republic and obtain a double degree from both universities. Zittau is your place of study for the first three semesters - the language of instruction is German. In the fourth and fifth semesters, you change location and study in English. This international focus strengthens your language skills and prepares you for working in global companies.
You will spend the sixth semester in a company. There you will complete a practical module and write your Bachelor thesis on a real task from industry.
Optional variant with KIAdirekt
What's special: This degree course is optionally available as a cooperative KIAdirekt course. This means you work in a company (the cooperation partner) and earn money. The KIAdirekt variant at our university is explained in more detail here.

Course content
Detailed study plan
The course lasts six semesters and combines engineering fundamentals with practical specialization. In the first two semesters, you will build a solid foundation in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, mechanics and programming. You will also study materials technology and data science.
In the third semester, you will expand your knowledge of automation and measurement technology, systems theory and communication networks. Initial modules on semiconductor technology will prepare you for specialization. From the fourth semester onwards, the focus is on specialization topics:
- Thin film and vacuum technology
- Robotics and collaborative robot systems
- Image processing and artificial neural networks
- Cyber-physical systems and quality management
You will complete the fourth semester at the Technical University of Liberec and the fifth semester back in Zittau. Both semesters are taught in English. In the sixth semester, you will gain professional experience during a twelve-week practical module and complete your studies with a Bachelor thesis in a company.
For the KIAdirekt variant, practical phases are completed in the company during the lecture-free period.

Admission, language skills and costs
This transnational degree course has some special features, which are explained in more detail here.
Language skills
German students start their studies at the HSZG, Czech students less than 30 km away at the Technical University in Liberec (TUL). Both groups are then brought together from the 4th semester onwards. English for Engineers is offered as a module during your studies at the HSZG. This allows you to expand and strengthen your English language skills: Details and requirements
Admission requirements
These correspond to the requirements of the KIAdirekt study form: All details
Costs
During the stay of German students at TUL (4th semester) and Czech students at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (5th semester), there are no tuition fees for students. Costs and fees in connection with social security, such as costs for meals, accommodation, membership in student organizations, etc., are to be borne by the students themselves. Health and social security insurance is the responsibility of the students in accordance with the laws of the country in which they are studying.
