Semiconductor technology is at the heart of digitalization. Smartphones, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence would be unthinkable without high-performance chips. The Bachelor’s program in Mechatronics for Manufacturing qualifies you to develop and optimize automated manufacturing processes in this key industry. What to Expect from the Program
The program equips you with interdisciplinary skills in three core areas:
- Fundamentals of engineering: electrical engineering, mechanics, computer science, robotics, and materials science
- Semiconductor technology: thin-film and cleanroom technology, materials, and chip manufacturing processes
- Production and Quality Management: Process automation, measurement technology, data analysis, and maintenance
A unique feature of the program is its binational structure. You’ll study in collaboration with the Technical University of Liberec (TUL) in the Czech Republic and earn a dual degree from both universities. The Zittau campus is your study location for the first three semesters—the language of instruction is German. In the fourth and fifth semesters, you’ll change locations and study in English. This international focus strengthens your language skills and prepares you for careers in globally operating companies.
You’ll spend the sixth semester at a company. There, you’ll complete a practical module and write your Bachelor thesis on a real-world problem from the industry.

Course content
Detailed study plan
The program spans six semesters and combines fundamental engineering principles with practical specialization. In the first two semesters, you’ll build a solid foundation in physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, mechanics, and programming. You’ll also begin exploring materials science and data science.
In the third semester, you’ll expand your knowledge of automation and measurement technology, systems theory, and communication networks. Introductory modules on semiconductor technology will prepare you for more advanced study. Starting in the fourth semester, the focus shifts to specialization topics:
- Thin-film and vacuum technology
- Robotics and collaborative robot systems
- Image Processing and Artificial Neural Networks
- Cyber-physical systems and Quality management
You’ll spend the fourth semester at the Technical University of Liberec and the fifth semester back in Zittau. Both advanced study semesters are taught in English. In the sixth semester, you’ll gain professional experience during a twelve-week practical module and complete your degree with a Bachelor thesis at a company.

Admission, language skills and costs

Language Skills
German students begin their studies at HSZG, while Czech students start at the Technical University of Liberec (TUL), located less than 30 km away. Both groups then join together starting in the 4th semester. “English for Engineers” is offered as a module during your studies at the HSZG. Costs: German students studying at TUL (4th semester) and Czech students studying at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (5th semester) do not incur any tuition fees. Costs and fees related to social security—such as expenses for meals, housing, membership in student organizations, etc.—are the responsibility of the students themselves. Health and social insurance are the responsibility of the students in accordance with the laws of the country in which they are studying.

Process development
You develop and optimize manufacturing processes in chip production. You will analyze process parameters, increase yields and ensure stable processes in the semiconductor industry.
Automation technology
You introduce and maintain robotics applications in cleanrooms. You will integrate mechanics, electronics and software into functioning production systems.
Quality management
You ensure production standards are met and perform error analyses. You develop testing concepts and support the continuous improvement of manufacturing processes.
Robotics
You will develop and program industrial robots for assembly, material handling, or quality inspection. You will optimize motion sequences and design the collaboration between humans and machines.
Digital manufacturing
You introduce smart factory solutions and network machines and systems. You use image processing and AI to optimize processes in Industry 4.0.
Technical Sales
You’ll advise companies on selecting automation solutions and mechatronics products. You’ll combine technical expertise with a customer-focused approach and oversee projects through to implementation.
