The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) hosts the ASME Turbo EXPO annually; with approximately 3,000 participants from around the world, it is the largest and most important conference focusing on turbomachinery. This year, the conference took place from June 13–17, 2016, in Seoul, South Korea. A poster presentation introduced the spline-based table look-up method developed by Mr Matthias Kunick at the Department of Technical Thermodynamics at the Zittau (SBTL) was presented. Developed in cooperation with the Technical University of Dresden and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, this computational method is suitable for the accurate and, at the same time, extremely fast calculation of thermophysical state variables of working fluids in numerical process simulations using splineinterpolation, such as in numerical flow simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This method is the subject of a new guideline from the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS), which was adopted in 2015 as an internationally binding standard. The poster presentation introduced the audience to the fundamentals of the SBTL method and its practical application. A jury consisting of 17 experts selected the presented poster from a total of 44 submissions and awarded it the “ASME Turbo EXPO Student Poster Award (1st Place).”
