New University Council meets for the first time!
The committee agrees on working methods and objectives for the next five years.
Let’s tackle the challenges of the future together! Guided by this vision, the newly constituted University Council met for the first time on Wednesday, August 26, in the Senate Hall of the Hans-Joachim-Hildebrand-Building in Zittau.
First, the new and returning members got to know each other better in a pleasant atmosphere. The council, led by its new Chair, Prof. Dr. Welf-Guntram Drossel—who also serves as Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) in Chemnitz— agreed on their working methods and objectives for the 2020–2025 term.
“I see the University Council as a strategic source of inspiration for the university administration, one that aims to support the university in playing a central role in the region’s structural transformation. In doing so, we will also engage in critical scrutiny, because that is precisely what constitutes constructive collaboration,” said First Chair Prof. Drossel.
”Along with him, all members present expressed their strong motivation to actively help shape the university’s future and to serve as advisors and discussion partners who will convey diverse perspectives to the University Executive Board. “Perspectives that are intended to convey a sense of how society and the academic community perceive certain issues, and which will then facilitate a more comprehensive evaluation of decisions,” said Prof. Dr. Welf-Guntram Drossel.
This initiative is also welcomed by the Rector of HSZG, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kratzsch. Together with the Vice President for education and international affairs, Prof. Dr. Sophia Keil; the Prorector for research, Prof. Dr. Raj Kollmorgen; and Mr. RD Christoph Duscha (representing the Chancellor, Ms. Karin Hollstein), he defined the key areas of focus for the collaboration between the University Executive Board and the University Council in consultation with the Council members, presented the status report, and looks forward to a joint, productive collaboration.
“Whether it’s sharpening our own profile in times of structural change, promoting the acceptance of digitalization in teaching, or addressing the challenges associated with demographic change—the university leadership and the university as a whole face major challenges. The first important steps have been taken. Now it is time—together with the newly constituted University Council—to continue on this path together. And I am very much looking forward to this journey,” said the Rector.
