An exciting journey into space awaits all young explorers! Volker Schmid, the mission leader of the last three major ESA missions of German astronauts, will share fascinating insights and experiences. He was the head of Alexander Gerst's BlueDot and Horizons missions and Matthias Maurer's Cosmic Kiss mission.
His topics for the session:
- Living and working on a space station: what does everyday life in space look like? What experiments are carried out there?
- Why do we go into space? The exciting reasons and goals of space missions.
- The hovering robot CIMON: A fascinating insight into the use of this high-tech assistant.
- Future plans for space travel: What are the next big missions? Will we soon be going to the moon?
About Volker Schmid: Volker Schmid heads the DLR mission team for Alexander Gerst's Horizons mission. After an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic and three years working in industry, he studied aerospace engineering at Aachen University of Applied Sciences. He then completed a Master of Space Systems Engineering at TU Delft. At DLR, he was in charge of the ISS sub-programs of the European space transporter ATV and the rescue vehicle CRV. In 2011, he took over as head of the ISS specialist group and initiated the CIMON project. Volker Schmid is responsible for the ISS experiment MagVector/MFX and MFX-2 as well as the Horizons mission.
