Karl-Bernert-Kolleg - Regional timber construction methods in Lausitz

Dear Sir or Madam, dear friends of half-timbered houses,

From October 17, 2019, through January 23, 2020, the Karl Bernert Seminar at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will focus on typical regional timber-frame construction methods in the Lausitz. The lecture series is part of the “fundamentale” program at the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management. The 2019–2020 fall semester marks the 20th edition of the program. Since 2010, it has borne the name of the distinguished Umgebindehaus researcher Karl Bernert (1927–2009). The longtime historic preservationist from Löbau had worked closely with the university and, together with Prof. Christian Schurig, was one of the founders of the lecture series. The lectures take place on Thursdays from 4:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in Building Z II of the university (Schliebenstraße 21 in 02763 Zittau), Room K19. The Karl-Bernert-Kolleg will once again showcase typical regional timber-frame construction methods of Lausitz—Umgebinde houses and Schrotholz houses—as a living testament to folk architecture. Of particular interest is the diverse perspective offered in lectures by faculty members from the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences as well as by renowned speakers from the region. The event will examine various aspects of the typical regional timber-frame construction methods of Lausitz (construction, building research, historic preservation, building ecology, building physics, living in historic buildings, renovation…). An excursion on November 14, 2019, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., will take participants to notable sites featuring half-timbered houses in Hirschfelde, Ober- and Niedercunnersdorf, and Ebersbach. During the tour, Prof. Thomas Worbs will provide expert commentary on the historic neighborhoods and buildings. The lectures are open to the public and free of charge for participants. Interested parties are cordially invited. A limited number of spots are still available for the field trip, which can be filled by external participants (fee: 20 €).
