Lecture Series as Part of the East-West College at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in the Summer Semester of 2019

"Work in Europe"

- Every Thursday, 4:15–5:45 p.m. in GI/0.01 -

How do we work in Europe, and specifically in the East Saxon border region? Is work today a burden or a pleasure, a means to an end or an end in itself? What characterizes good work, and what characterizes bad (or precarious) work? Are there uniform criteria for this, or does it depend on the “location” of the company or the observer? How can work be structured differently—not only in terms of European and regional policy but also “micro-politically” (i.e., within individual companies or organizations)? How does job satisfaction arise and change, and how can employers become more attractive? These and other questions will be addressed by the speakers in the lecture series during the summer semester of 2019 as part of the East-West College (OWK). The lectures will examine various facets of the topic “Working in Europe”—and in our region—from academic, political, and civil society perspectives.

The East-West College is a public lecture series organized in cooperation with Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the Institute for Cultural Infrastructure in Saxony. In the winter semester, Professor Dr. Matthias Theodor Vogt (Faculty of Managerial and Cultural Studies) is responsible for the conceptual and organizational design, and in the summer semester, Professor Dr. Raj Kollmorgen (Faculty of Social Sciences) takes on this role. The various topics of the lecture series address current issues and developmental processes that are particularly evident in the German-Czech-Polish border region.

The lectures will take place every other week (odd calendar weeks) during the 2019 summer semester, on Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. in Lecture Hall 0.01 of the GI building.

The lecture series is open to all students and staff at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and is also aimed at the interested public. Following each lecture, which lasts approximately 45–60 minutes, there will be an opportunity for discussion with the speaker and the audience. The OWK is a platform for dialogue between experts and the general public, as well as between academia and professional practice, in the border triangle region.
