Colors on the half-timbered house

Every year, on the Wednesday before Open House Day for Umgebindehouses, the Information Center for Umgebindehouses (IZU) hosts an evening lecture series. The IZU, part of the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, serves as the academic point of contact for topics related to the Umgebindehaus and is committed to preserving this regionally significant architectural style.

This year’s lecture evening will take place on May 24, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. in Rooms 0.01 and 0.02 of the ZIV building at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Theodor-Körner-Allee 8 in Zittau.

Ms. Anka Böthig (architect, building biologist, color designer) from naturwerkstatt Dresden will give a presentation on the topic “Color in the Umgebindehaus—Materials, Color Palette, Design.”

Building on historical coating techniques using the materials available at the time, the presentation will explore currently available paint materials. Recommendations regarding paint materials and coating systems for half-timbered houses will be derived from this analysis. A key focus of the lecture evening will be the color schemes of half-timbered houses in a historical context. Based on findings from the historic building, the presentation will cover, among other topics, the production of relevant historical color schemes in consultation with the historic preservation office.
