Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences | Application deadline: 12.02.2026
At the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Institute of Process Engineering, Process Automation and Measurement Technology (IPM), a research project funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) entitled "DCS Monitor III - Development of a methodology for monitoring transport and storage casks for spent nuclear fuel during extended interim storage by analyzing the external gamma and neutron radiation field - sub-project: Development, construction and use of a measurement system" is seeking to fill the following position (1.0 FTE) as soon as possible
Scientific assistant (m/f/d) in the field of radiation detection and measurement system development
- Reference: 07-2026 DCSIII WM-
to be filled for a limited period until 31.12.2028.
In the DCS Monitor III research project, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is developing a measurement system for recording gamma and neutron radiation fields in coordination with the project partner TU Dresden (TUD) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). The aim is to develop reliable monitoring strategies for extended interim storage.
The IPM assumes central tasks in the further development of the measurement technology, the optimization of the measurement procedures as well as the implementation and evaluation of field studies on real containers.
As part of the project, the job holder (m/f/d) will work on the following tasks in particular:
Further development and optimization of the existing measurement system for neutron and gamma radiation detection,
Development and testing of improved measurement procedures for high-precision positioning of scintillation detectors on CASTOR casks,
Conception and implementation of extended data acquisition for energy-resolved measurement of gamma and neutron radiation,
Planning, preparation and implementation of field measurements on transport and storage casks in coordination with the interim storage facility operator,
Evaluation, interpretation and documentation of the measurement data and comparison with simulation results,
Participation in the development of monitoring routines for recurring measurements in interim storage facilities,
The following knowledge and skills are required
Completed scientific university degree (e.g. automation technology, mechatronics, mechanical engineering or comparable),
Knowledge of experimental measurement technology and data acquisition,
Experience in handling sensor systems and measurement hardware,
Willingness to participate in field measurements under increased safety requirements,
good written and spoken English,
Confident handling of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs.
The following are also desirable
Interest in scientific documentation and publications,
Basic knowledge of radiation measurement technology (gamma/neutron),
Experience with scintillation detectors or spectral data analysis,
Knowledge of Python or similar languages for data analysis,
Interest in safety-related issues in the nuclear environment.
We expect from you
A high level of commitment to practical, application-oriented research,
a willingness to collaborate across disciplines and develop technical expertise,
reliable participation in the implementation of a publicly funded third-party project,
a committed and team-oriented way of working,
goal-oriented and independent implementation of work tasks,
Willingness and interest in further professional and personal development.
We offer you
a varied job in a future-oriented research project with high practical relevance,
the opportunity to actively contribute to the sustainable development of the Upper Lusatia region
If the personal requirements are met, remuneration will be paid up to pay group 13 TV-L. The 1st place of work is Zittau. Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences strives for a balanced personnel structure and therefore welcomes applications from people of all genders. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if they have the same professional qualifications. Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences has set itself the goal of increasing the proportion of women in teaching and research and therefore expressly encourages women to apply.
