As part of a planned pilot project to network German and Polish University Libraries, regular contacts take place between those responsible at the Juliusz Słowacki Library of the Giant Mountains University(Karkonoska Państwowa Szkoła Wyższa) in Jelenia Góra and the University Library of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.
On January 27, 2015, representatives of the two institutions met once again. Following the previous visit of a Zittau delegation to Jelenia Góra, the Polish guests came to the University Library in Zittau this time. The Polish visitors included Ms Biniek, Officer for International Cooperation at the University of the Giant Mountains, as well as Mr. Kazimierz Stąpór, Director of the Library and the Centre for Scientific Information, and Dr. Józef Zaprucki, Research Associate.
The guests were welcomed by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Friedrich Albrecht, and the
Director of the University Library, Dr. Falk Maiwald. In his welcoming remarks, the Rector referred to German-Polish cooperation as an important opportunity for universities in the border region and praised the work of previous international projects. Dr. Maiwald briefly presented the tasks of the Centre for Communication and Information, which he heads, as well as the status of the preparatory measures for the model project applied for by the two libraries.
The visitors were then able to gain interesting impressions during a tour of the University Library led by Mr. Rolf Funke, representing the head librarian. The differences in the organization of the two institutions, which had already been identified, led to a lively exchange of ideas, which was then continued in a concentrated discussion on the content of the proposed project. Central topics were the importance of the project due to its intended innovative model character, the focus on the expectations of library users and the sustainability of possible project results. New thoughts and ideas for the continuation and expansion of the collaboration, also beyond the project applied for, were collected and discussed.
Both the German and Polish sides expressed their appreciation of the constructive and friendly discussions at the end of the meeting and agreed to hold the next working meeting in Jelenia Góra.
