What a wonderful idea... Setting off on an adventure across Eastern Europe on old, chugging trains! That's exactly how I wanted to start my Erasmus semester. First with an overnight train from Dresden to Budapest. I already had the chance to spend a day in Budapest during an excursion in the spring. This huge city with its beautiful streets, monumental buildings and lively nightlife was incredibly impressive for me and I knew that I wouldn't want to miss the chance to discover the city again. When I realized that after spending a night in a sleeper seat with all my luggage, I obviously didn't want to explore Budapest before sitting on a long-distance bus for another nine hours, chugging along bumpy country roads from Hungary towards Transylvania, cheap flights came to my rescue. I pay an incredible €15 for a flight ticket from Cologne-Bonn to Cluj. For the whole trip, i.e. Berlin-Cologne-Cluj, I pay €35 plus €50 for my suitcase. I pay that much for almost every trip from Görlitz to my home country. However, I have to spend a night at Cologne airport. No problem - thanks to the 24-hour store. So I sit in Cologne at night with a shandy and potato chips and watch one Star Wars episode after another. May the Force be with me. I definitely like it better than being on the road for two days.
