Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP and Office 2003 on April 8, 2014.

From this date, there will no longer be any updates, hotfixes, security updates or free or paid support for Windows XP and Office 2003, i.e. Microsoft will no longer close security gaps. The affected computers are therefore more susceptible to external attacks and represent a security risk for the entire university network. Data loss may be the result.
Windows XP will also no longer be supported by new hardware and software products in the future, including peripheral devices and virus protection software. For example, some printer drivers are already no longer supported by Windows XP.

The HRZ therefore recommends that all structural units of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and their users switch from Windows XP to a current operating system (Windows 7 or Windows 8) and use Office 2007 or higher.

If an XP computer is found to be infected with malware in the university network, it will be disconnected from the network by the HRZ to prevent further damage.
