Don't we all somehow love to pigeonhole people? We look at someone once or hear a few details about them and we already know them. In a way, we even need this: it helps us to deal with the infinite number of variations in human personalities by imposing a simplified and seemingly orderly categorization on them. However, we are usually partially, if not completely, wrong when we make these judgments. People are often simply atypical. Assigning them to a pigeonhole because of certain behaviors often seems plausible and offers an initial apparent explanation, but it usually turns out to be wrong later on. However, a real problem only arises when we relegate large groups of people to such pigeonholes and thus apply general and simplified explanations to them all - indiscriminately. As a result, we often draw completely erroneous lines between groups of people and make mistakes, sometimes fatal ones, when we interpret their actions accordingly and have to deal with them.
In "Typical..." we will take a closer look at these mechanisms and examine how we deal with stereotypes, archetypes, prototypes, antitypes, genotypes, phenotypes, ecotypes - typical of us, through dance - on a daily basis.
