Student Day: Tannhäuser and the Singers' War at Wartburg Castle

The April Student Day at the Theater Görlitz presents a great romantic opera by Richard Wagner.

The knight and singer Tannhäuser once left Wartburg society to enjoy boundless pleasure in the Venusberg. In the meantime, however, he has grown weary of this and leaves Mrs. Venus again. He is invited back to Wartburg Castle to sing in a singing contest and win the prize of Elisabeth, the Landgrave's niece who loves him. As the uncompromising man once again clashes with the morals of those gathered and even ends up singing about the goddess of love, it turns into a singing war. Only Elisabeth's commitment to him saves Tannhäuser's life. The repentant sinner is to go to Rome to obtain forgiveness of his sins from the Pope. The Pope refuses, but in the end the divine influence of a desperately pleading woman is stronger than that of God's supposed representative on earth.

Wagner's opera is not only rich in popular numbers such as the overture, the entrance of the guests at Wartburg Castle, the pilgrims' chorus and Wolfram's Song to the Evening Star: it is also a gripping drama about a non-conformist artist who challenges society but ultimately breaks with it. It also problematizes the image of women at the time, the division of women into whores and saints.
