#QuarantineAndChill - social contacts despite social distancing?

Helping people and getting to know people - social contacts in times of home office.

Dear fellow students, dear readers,

We are all currently in a difficult situation. For our own protection and for the protection of others who may belong to a risk group or are still "keeping things running" for us in systemically important professions, we are staying at home and reducing our personal social contacts to a minimum. During this time, we want to give you some ideas on how you can still stay in touch with your friends, pass the time or even meet new people.

Support your fellow students and classmates

Despite Corona, there is a lot to do at university. We are already thinking about the time afterwards and are working together with the ice rink in Bautzen on the development of new products as part of the Product Management module. In order to get as comprehensive a picture as possible of the wishes and needs of ice rink users, we have created a survey that will take less than 10 minutes of your time.

By taking part, you are helping us to develop a product that is perfectly tailored to you and will offer you a varied leisure activity.

So give yourself a jolt and answer the surveyan exciting winter is just a click away!

Not for losers

If you don't have anyone at home to play board games with, or simply prefer to play with friends rather than family, you can easily arrange to meet up via Skype or another video communication platform. Of course, not every game can be played in this way, but a game of pinochle, for example, can be played with relatively little effort. You simply grab a cup and 5 dice. You can easily print out the dice from the Internet. If you prefer something a little more challenging, you can also play a game of chess. We played a round of "Mensch ärgere dich nicht" together and had a lot of fun.

Quit playing games with my heart

If you still want to meet new people or even make friends, then arrange to meet up with some of your friends on Skype. Now you're probably thinking: "But I already know them!" Yes, that's right, you already know them. But if each of your friends invites another person to the video conference who the other people present don't know, you can get to know new people without having to leave the house. And who knows, maybe one of your "old friends" will bring your soulmate(s) to the chat and give you a happy end to the contact ban.

Help where help is needed

It is also easier to meet new people if you are socially active. It doesn't matter whether you do the shopping for people who belong to the risk group or whether you take on a part-time job as a harvest helper via one of the many different platforms, some of which we have linked to in this article.

Keeping a cool head at home

In addition to social contacts outside your household, you should of course also look after your flatmates and families. The new situation, in which you spend an unusual amount of time together, also creates new challenges. We have collected a few tips for you on how you can still make your days as harmonious as possible.

  • Create a structured daily routine
  • Create time to be productive (studying, working from home, etc.)
  • Arrange fixed times for breakfast, lunch and dinner together
  • Schedule times for walks together, various (household) chores, games, etc.
  • Exchange ideas during dinner conversations
  • Plan your meals together and cook together so that no one feels disadvantaged

Make the best of it

These are some suggestions from us on how you can maintain your social contacts during this time.

And once we've survived the crisis, we'll meet up at the ice rink at the Wenzelsmarkt in Bautzen! To make sure that the ice rink is just right for you, we would like to take this opportunity to refer you once again to our survey on the use of ice rinks.

So follow the link and take the opportunity to actively support us in developing a product tailored to you!

Take care, stay healthy & hopefully see you soon in Görlitz!

Best regards from

Lisa, Verena & Melanie from Wtm19
