Özen in Görlitz

Guest article by Özen Ergürer:I come from Northern Cyprus and study in Izmir. Izmir is a beautiful city in Turkey and I study translation and interpreting at Ege University. I learned German in a preparatory class at the university, so my German wasn't that good. "I have to learn it properly", I thought. So I took the Erasmus exam and passed. Then my adventure with the University of Görlitz began.[caption id="attachment_538" align="alignright" width="300"] Halloween[/caption]I didn't actually have any information about it or the city. I had experienced and learned. I was not a Turkish student of my own, so I had settled in a short time. My Erasmus was five months long. I got to know a lot of foreigners during that time and our friendships and memories are lasting. In our shared flat, for example, we were two Turks, two Hungarians and two Germans. That meant different cultures in one apartment. We organized lots of flat-sharing parties and held foreign evenings, and my programme at Görlitz University was economics and languages. I had seven subjects there, but two of them were very difficult for me, because I didn't have those subjects in Izmir. These were Marketing and General Science Basics. They were not important for translation and interpreting, but I had to pass them and I passed them all.[caption id="attachment_540" align="aligncenter" width="255"] Christmas in Dresden[/caption]I had visited some cities with my best friends e.g. Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden and Prague. I had a wonderful time with them and I still miss them. Sometimes we shared our home cooking and ate together in the shared flat. But one important memory for me was Christmas time. I am a Muslim and I never had the chance to see Christmas until then. I am very glad that I learned another religion properly. We had visited many churches and simply admired them. In Northern Cyprus I have almost no chance to see snow because we have such a short winter, but thanks to Görlitz I had seen the beautiful sides of autumn and winter.[caption id="attachment_539" align="alignright" width="290"] My last day at university[/caption]I am not regretful that I spent a semester in Görlitz. Görlitz was a small and beautiful town with friendly people. You could learn anything there, as I managed to do... Sponsored by:
