Together with the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, research-enthusiastic pupils in year 8 of the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Löbau have had the opportunity to research and experiment in laboratories during a science project week for several years now.
This year, from 11-15 September, the pupils had time to work in small groups on a topic, process and evaluate it and present their new knowledge to the other groups in the form of a presentation and a scientific poster.
The Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering provided two topics for the curious young researchers, which were accepted with interest.
Together with Dr. Vogel, the topic "How much energy does a house need?" used calculations and experiments to investigate the question of how high the energy requirements for a single building can be. In preparation for this, terms were clarified and the pupils learned more about heat loss and heat gain in buildings. Over the course of three days, a blower door measurement was then carried out, an energy performance certificate for a building was drawn up and both were evaluated and a presentation was created.
Another team of students worked with research assistant Thomas Schäfer to experimentally investigate the performance characteristics of wind turbines using a model. First of all, there was an introduction to the basics of wind systems on Earth. This was followed by methods for determining wind speed. Once the correct application had been briefly explained, the practical use of a thermoanemometer and the joint evaluation of the measured values began immediately. This was followed by experiments to determine the power characteristic curve on a model of a wind turbine at different wind speeds. The effects of changing the number, shape or angle of attack of the blades were observed. At the final presentation of the project week at the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium, the team won second place.

We were delighted to work with the students and get them excited about scientific topics in our faculty.
