Flood 2010

two years later ...

In August 2010, floods in eastern Saxony flooded the University Library's stacks in Zittau by a meter.

After two years in storage, the rescued stacks have now returned to the University Library. A removal company specializing in libraries moved almost 400 linear metres of books. The stacks were redistributed between the library locations in Zittau and Görlitz. Stocks published before 1950 are now protected in a new special reading room on the upper floor of the Zittau University Library. The magazine at the Görlitz library, which is also located on the upper floor, was able to accommodate an additional 170 linear meters of stock. The remaining stock had to be stored again in the Zittau stacks in the basement, which had been restored and fitted with a flood protection door.

The necessary changes to the library system will soon be completed so that the stacks can once again be made available to users on a daily basis.
