The Lives of LGBTIQ* People in Saxony—Exhibition at HSB Zittau
An exhibition about the lives and experiences of queer people in Saxony
Most of what we are or are not allowed to do is determined by people who have never had any experience with the issue and cannot put themselves in our shoes.
This traveling exhibition invites visitors to explore the lives of the LGBTIQ* communities in Saxony. It is based on the findings of a comprehensive study on the lives of LGBTIQ* individuals in Saxony from 2022, published by the Saxon State Ministry of Justice and for Democracy, Europe, and Equality. Behind all the facts and figures are people with their own personal experiences and stories within our society. They share stories of discrimination and disadvantages in various areas of society, but also of support, acceptance, and recognition.
The fabrics used in this exhibition reflect the different realities of life and the challenges that LGBTIQ* people face, for example, during the process of coming out and discovering their identity. The variety of colors, patterns, and materials symbolizes the diversity of queer communities and, at the same time, their resilience and strength, which endure despite discrimination and exclusion. The daily struggle for recognition and equal rights is a call for a society in which every person, regardless of gender and sexuality, is seen and heard. Action by the government and civil society can therefore enormously improve the lived realities of LGBTQI* people in the Free State.
