The reason for the royal tour is the suggestion made by Günter Nooke, the Federal Chancellor's Personal Representative for Africa, to MP Kretschmer that his idea of a partnership with one of the African countries should be put into practice through a state partnership between Saxony and Cameroon. This could open up interesting opportunities for encounters and cooperation, particularly for our university, both in the technical and social science subjects, and would support our common goal of strengthening the region's attractiveness through intellectual openness.
It is particularly pleasing that it is not the state level that is seeking dialogue with our region and you personally in particular, but the local civil society. Its stability is crucial to curbing the causes of migration at source and developing alternatives. Incidentally, Cameroon is considered "Africa in miniature" and is richly blessed by nature, from the 4,000-metre-high Mount Cameroon to the gorilla sanctuaries in the primary forest.
The royal tour is under the patronage of Members of the Bundestag Andreas Lämmel and Frank Heinrich; it is supported by the Saxon State Chancellery, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the embassies of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Cameroon. The background on the part of the BMZ is the question of the cultural sustainability of development policy to date - the Nooke delegation report can be found here.
