Digital help for everyday life: AAL lab brings technology closer to senior citizens

How do you set up Wi-Fi securely, how does video telephony work and what exactly is an app? Senior citizens were able to get to the bottom of these and many other questions at the AAL Lab in Görlitz on Monday, May 5, 2025.

At an open information event, older people received practical support in using smartphones, tablets and laptops.

The AAL Lab invited people to familiarize themselves with digital everyday helpers in a relaxed atmosphere. Participants were supported in using their devices. The focus was on typical applications such as sending messages, making video calls to family and friends, using apps and the topic of data security on the internet. Many visitors found the opportunity to bring their own devices with them and address specific questions or problems particularly helpful. Whether it was WiFi that wasn't working, a setting on a smartphone that was difficult to understand or uncertainties about how to use it - participants were able to clarify individual concerns directly on site. This created a personal approach to technology, which made it easier for many to get started and helped to break down inhibitions.

The event aimed to break down existing inhibitions and give older people more confidence in using digital devices. Many of those present were able to get to know new functions of their devices for the first time and were surprised at how helpful they can be in everyday life - for example, for communicating with relatives, for orientation or for online services.

With this event, the AAL Lab responded to a frequently cited social problem: the lack of technical skills in old age. Many older people feel overwhelmed or excluded when it comes to using digital devices, as training courses are often lacking or not tailored to their needs. This is precisely where the AAL Lab comes in and aims to strengthen digital participation through low-threshold, everyday formats and at the same time promote confidence in new technologies.

The consistently positive response from the participants showed the high demand for such offers. Due to the high demand, follow-up events are already being planned in the AAL Lab.
