The Görlitz first-year students - What has happened so far

How have the youngest members of our university community settled into life in Görlitz? In this article, you can read about the experiences of the winter semester first-year students with Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, our faculty and the city on the Neisse.

The first-year students from Görlitz report on the start of their studies at the HSZG

Author: Verena Nowatzky

The days are getting longer, everything is blooming and green and we can finally enjoy sunny afternoons at Berzi (Berzdorfer See) and balmy nights with a drink or two. But what are our new arrivals in their (now) second semester actually doing? I found out how the first-year students of the Faculty of Managerial and Cultural Studies have settled in in Görlitz and at the university. Have fun reading!

Study program: Health Management

Why did you decide to study in Görlitz?
I decided to study in Görlitz because there are smaller classes in Görlitz, which makes it easier to build a more personal relationship between students and lecturers and not feel lost in the crowd.
Furthermore, the degree course is very well structured and you don't have to create your own timetable, which saves you a lot of stress.

What do you like about Görlitz?
I think it's great that there are so many parks in Görlitz. You can relax there or meet up with friends. Lectures are sometimes held outside when the weather is good, which is a lot of fun.
I also really like the cinema in Görlitz and enjoy watching movies there with friends.
Of course, you shouldn't forget the beautiful houses in Görlitz, which have made Görlitz famous as a film city.

Does the course meet your expectations?
The course meets my expectations and even exceeds them to some extent.
However, the time required for the course is more than I expected.

Your highlight so far
Due to the corona pandemic, we haven't been able to do too much in Görlitz so far.
However, the Campus Open Air is taking place in Görlitz this week, which I'm really looking forward to.

What else would you like to see (both at the university and in Görlitz)?
More leisure activities at the weekend would be nice for people who go to work during the week.

Favorite place in Görlitz
My favorite place in Görlitz is the canteen at the university.

What I order at the bar
Tequila Sunrise

Degree course: International Business Communication

Why did you choose to study in Görlitz?
The proximity to my home town and the low cost of living. Also, the course is only available in Görlitz.

What do you like about Görlitz?
The beautiful old town and the close proximity to Poland.

Does the course meet your expectations?
Yes :-)

Your highlight so far
The hall of residence in general

Favorite place in Görlitz
Viaduct

What I order at the bar
Beer or gin and tonic

Elsa

Degree course: Tourism Management

Why did you decide to study in Görlitz?
Because Görlitz is close to my parents and my aunt already studied here. It's also a well-organized university where it's good to concentrate.

What do you like about Görlitz?
The old houses, alleyways and streets, and that almost everything is within walking distance.

Does the course meet your expectations?
It's more business and more theoretical than I expected, but nothing that you can't manage.

Your highlight so far
The Fresher's Week with the various offers from the FSR-MK Faculty Student Committee.

What else would you like to see (both at the university and in Görlitz)?
More nearby shopping facilities and a better road network. Or a corresponding map for students. At the university, more emphasis could be placed on cooperation and group work, both in the classes and with the professors.

Favorite place in Görlitz
My favorite place is the Neiße-Ufer-Park.

What I order at the bar
Sweet mixed drinks

Benches, trees and plenty of meadows with a view of the River Neisse

Michelle (Shelly)

Study program: Cultural Management

Why did you choose to study in Görlitz?
I found the idea of a smaller university with a less anonymous atmosphere very appealing.

What do you like about Görlitz?
I was particularly enchanted by the architecture. Seeing buildings from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods, the Baroque and Art Nouveau in such a "small" space is really something special.

Does the course meet your expectations?
I would have liked a smaller proportion of economics subjects ;)

Your highlight so far
Trips to Saxon Switzerland or the Zittau Mountains

What else would you like to see (both at the university and in Görlitz)?
More feminist content!

Favorite place in Görlitz
My shared flat

What I order at the bar
Vodka soda

Now you've been able to get a little insight into the lives of our first-year students. It makes me nostalgic and makes me think of my first year at the HSZG - they grow up so quickly! Hopefully our new students will have many more great experiences in the coming semesters. In any case, I wish them every success for the rest of their studies and an unforgettable time in Görlitz!
