The way to Görlitz - How our students ended up at the HSZG

Many roads lead to Rome - or to the HSZG. We conducted a survey to find out how prospective students became aware of our university and are now presenting the results here.

How our students came to the HSZG

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) may not be the best-known university in Germany, but every year many new students from all over Germany and abroad are drawn to the east to study here for life. We, the editorial team of the Faculty of Management and Cultural Studies, asked around the Görlitz campus to find out what attracted students to the HSZG.

For many, a very important and decisive reason is a recommendation from family, friends and acquaintances. Sometimes the uncle sends the link to the HSZG website, sometimes the best buddy also wants to study in Görlitz. Relatives or people close to them who have studied at the HSZG and recommended it to others were also mentioned.

Another not surprising result is the high proportion of students who became aware of the HSZG via the internet. Course-related platforms often played a role here, e.g. for Tourism Management www.tourismus-studieren.de or www.tourismus-management-studium.de.

The HSZG shines with special study programs

Another reason why the HSZG also scores well in internet searches is the considerable number of very special and rare degree courses, such as the aforementioned Tourism Management, but also Culture and Management as well as Curative Education and Communication Psychology. The latter can only be found as a full-time Bachelor's degree in Germany at the HSZG.

Furthermore, our university is very popular in the Lusatia region and in the federal state of Saxony in general, and its range of courses is unique, which is why many young people from the surrounding area decide to stay in their home region after school and study here.

Similarly, some also came across the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences via the study guide of the Federal Employment Agency, which lists all courses of study in Germany, or via traditional careers advice.

The University Information Day (HIT for short) also plays a role in the decision to attend the HSZG. Both the face-to-face and online HITs were well received by prospective students. Of those we surveyed, around half came to campus for the HIT before starting their studies. Here you can find out what special program items the last university information day, which was developed and carried out by students from the Tourism Management course, had to offer.

When I enquired about studying at the HSZG in spring 2019, the HIT, which took place in January, was already a while ago. Nevertheless, I received an informative personal on-site interview from a lecturer on request, which helped me a lot.

Last but not least, the HSZG impresses with its fantastic location. In the heart of Lusatia, in the middle of a historic town like Görlitz and right on the border with Poland, you learn in a very practical way and in relatively small groups at our university. It's definitely worth taking a look at our website!
