Research assistant (m/f/d) in the field of radiation detection and measurement system development - Reference: 07-2026 DCSIII WM -

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences | Application deadline: February 12, 2026

At the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM), the research project “DCS-Monitor III — Development of a Methodology for Monitoring Transport and Storage Containers for Spent Nuclear Fuel During Extended Interim Storage Through Analysis of the External Gamma and Neutron Radiation Field — Subproject: Development, Construction, and Deployment of a Measurement System,” funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). We are seeking to fill a position (1.0 FTE) as a

Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of radiation detection and measurement system development
- Reference: 07-2026 DCSIII WM–

to be filled on a fixed-term basis until December 31, 2028.

As part of the DCS-Monitor III research project, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with its project partners TU Dresden (TUD) and the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), is developing a measurement system for monitoring gamma and neutron radiation fields. The goal is to develop reliable monitoring strategies for extended interim storage.

The IPM is responsible for key tasks in the further development of measurement technology, the optimization of measurement procedures, and the conduct and evaluation of field studies on actual containers.

As part of the project, the position holder (m/f/d) will be responsible in particular for the following tasks:

  • Further development and optimization of the existing measurement system for neutron and gamma radiation detection,

  • Development and testing of improved measurement procedures for the high-precision positioning of scintillation detectors on CASTOR containers,

  • Design and implementation of an expanded data acquisition system for energy-resolved measurement of gamma and neutron radiation,

  • Planning, preparation, and execution of field measurements on transport and storage containers in coordination with the interim storage facility operator,

  • Evaluation, interpretation, and documentation of measurement data, as well as comparison with simulation results,

  • Participation in the development of monitoring routines for recurring measurements at interim storage facilities,

  • Preparation of project reports and contribution to scientific publications.

The following knowledge and skills are required

  • a completed scientific college degree (e.g., in automation engineering, mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a comparable field),

  • Knowledge of experimental measurement technology and data acquisition,

  • Experience working with sensor systems and measurement hardware,

  • Willingness to participate in field measurements under heightened safety requirements,

  • good written and spoken English skills,

  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

In addition, the following are desirable:

  • an interest in scientific documentation and publications,

  • basic knowledge of radiation measurement technology (gamma/neutrons),

  • experience with scintillation detectors or spectral data analysis,

  • Knowledge of Python or similar languages for data analysis,

  • an interest in safety-related issues in the nuclear field.

We expect you to demonstrate

  • a strong commitment to practical, application-oriented research,

  • a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and to develop technical expertise,

  • reliable participation in the implementation of a publicly funded third-party project,

  • a dedicated and team-oriented work style,

  • the ability to carry out tasks in a goal-oriented and independent manner,

  • willingness and interest in professional and personal development.

We offer you

  • a varied role in a forward-looking research project with high practical relevance,

  • the opportunity to actively contribute to the sustainable development of the Upper Lusatia region,

  • flexible and family-friendly working hours within the framework of the applicable employment agreement,
  • opportunities for personal and professional development through targeted continuing education and training,
  • attractive employee benefits (company pension plan, annual bonus, capital-forming benefits),
  • a workplace Health Management program with initiatives to promote employee wellness, as well as
  • the opportunity to use a job ticket.
