We mourn the loss of Prof. Gerhard Ackermann

For nearly four decades, the energy sector of the GDR was inextricably linked to the name Gerhard Ackermann. At the forefront of all nuclear energy projects, he enjoyed high international standing as one of the leading scientists in this field.

When the GDR’s first research reactor went into operation in Rossendorf in 1957, Gerhard Ackermann, then 27 years old, was the technical director in charge. Twenty-four years later, at the age of 51, he was appointed Rector of what was then the Zittau University of Engineering. He thus succeeded Prof. Hans-Joachim Hildebrandt, the founding rector of the Zittau University of Engineering. He headed the Zittau educational institution for seven years—until 1988. During this time, the Zittau College of Engineering was granted the status of a technical university. In Zittau, it was now possible not only to earn a doctorate but also to complete a habilitation. Prof. Ackermann had played a leading role in preparing and overseeing this process.

The distinguished scientist and university professor has now passed away at the age of 91. He was associated with the university for over 21 years. In 1969, he accepted an appointment as professor of nuclear energy at the newly formed Zittau College of Engineering and was immediately tasked with providing education and leading the Department of Power Plant Systems and Energy Conversion.

On his initiative, the teaching and research reactor was built to provide students with hands-on training. It is also thanks to Gerhard Ackermann that specialists in nuclear energy have been trained in Zittau since 1983. After stepping down from the office of rector, he remained active at the Chair of Nuclear Energy at the Zittau University of Applied Sciences until 1990 and served as Dean of the Faculty of Power Plant Engineering and Energy Conversion.
