Open-minded universities - against xenophobia

Nationwide campaign by HRK member universities against xenophobia in Germany.

The universities united in the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) have launched a nationwide campaign against xenophobia in Germany. The HRK members reached an agreement to this effect yesterday in Kiel. On their homepages, they declare their stance with the slogan "Open-minded universities - against xenophobia" . The universities are thus reacting to the incidents of racially motivated verbal and physical violence in recent weeks and months.

"Universities are open-minded places. Diversity of opinion and international exchange are the basis of their research and teaching activities. In view of the current noticeable increase in xenophobic tendencies, universities feel called upon to stand up for these values," said HRK President Prof. Dr. Horst Hippler, who initiated the campaign.

"The exchange at the General Assembly made it clear that the universities are concerned, but also willing to take action. The university managements want to encourage university members to resist xenophobia and also have a corresponding effect in their regional environment," said Hippler. "In this phase, we need clear commitments and decisive action from the majority of the population in favor of a tolerant and open-minded society. Beyond all political discussions about the challenges arising from the influx of refugees, this consensus must be clearly articulated. The universities want to set an example here."
