Companies as guests at the HSZG

Representatives from trade, industry and research met for a workshop discussion at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

The use of modern polymer technologies, the replacement of traditional materials with innovative, natural-fiber-reinforced materials, and challenges in practical application were the topics of the “Workshop Discussions,” now being held for the second time at HSZG . The goal of this event series, organized by the Dresden Chamber of Crafts, the Dresden Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), the Zittau branch office, and the HSZG, is to bring together scientists and practitioners—so that research findings can be translated into new or optimized manufacturing and product lines as quickly as possible. To this end, the university’s research and development work, as well as its diverse range of services, are presented. For this reason, in addition to lectures, these meetings focus on tours of laboratory equipment and facilities.

The introductory technical presentations by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Henschel and the newly appointed Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Scholz also addressed the close collaboration between the university and the Zittau-based working group of the Fraunhofer Institute for Tool and Forming Technology.

The most important part of this event, however, is the “casual” conversations on the sidelines. This late afternoon once again demonstrated that there is a significant need for information among business leaders and that this event format is good at overcoming the hurdles involved in establishing contact.

As a special highlight, the Polyjet 3D printer at the

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering atundefined

was unveiled. Participants were surprised by the complexity of the structures that can be produced using this innovative printing technology. The available build volume is 300x200x150 mm. With a layer thickness of between 0.016 and 0.028 mm, depending on the plastic used, very fine details can be printed. This 3D printing technology is particularly well-suited for the development and production of prototypes and functional models.

The next “Workshop Discussion” will take place as scheduled in six months. Initial suggestions have already been made regarding the topics that will be the focus of that session.
