Students want to save the Baltic Sea

As part of Germany’s presidency of the Baltic University Program (BUP), Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, in cooperation with several international partners, is hosting this year’s BUP Student Conference on the topic of “Innovation for Sustainable Development: Resource and Energy Efficiency in Production and Transportation.”

The conference will take place from May 28 to June 1, 2018, in Zittau and Großschönau. Approximately 70 participants from various countries are expected to attend. In addition to an exciting academic program and an excursion to Volkswagen’s Transparent Factory in Dresden, there will also be plenty of time for participants to get to know one another. The conference will be held at Trixi Park, where all participants will also be staying. Admission to the swimming pool is free!

Since 2003, our university has been a member of one of the world’s largest networks for higher education, the Baltic University Program (BUP), with more than 220 partner institutions. The main themes are sustainable development, environmental protection, and democracy in the Baltic Sea region. The BUP was founded in 1991 at Uppsala University in Sweden (one of the world’s most renowned universities) by Prof. Dr. Lars Rydén. His vision was that, following the end of the “Cold War,” young people from countries in the Baltic Sea region—despite their different cultures, religions, and languages—should work together to find solutions to regional problems. The Baltic Sea is considered the most polluted and contaminated sea in the world.

The BUP offers students at member institutions a wide range of courses and materials in English on topics including sustainable development, environmental and biosphere protection, water resource management, resource and energy efficiency, and urban development.

Student conferences and summer schools are organized regularly, as well as professional development programs for faculty (“Teachers’ Conferences”). The German BUP Center is based at our university and is headed by Prof. Bernd Delakowitz. The presidency rotates every six months and is currently held by Germany—that is, essentially by our university.
